BCBS-IL ????'s

Recommended Posts

Same here...my weight kept going up that is why I decided to go into 2 Protein shakes/day, light meal supper, and exercise. I feel great but the ultimate is when I weigh myself on Saturday--that will be one week and see if I lost a few pounds. Good luck to you! Keep me posted on how everything is going on your end.:)

I have bcbs-IL insurance and am just now looking into lap band my BMI is 42 I have and appt with Diatician and phycyotrist in a couple weeks a referal letter from my Dr and all my paper work filled out and am starting the 6 month supervised Dr visits. Even with all this they can deny you? Im thinking of having the surg done in Galesburg Il and they seem to think Im a candidate. The health reason is I have severe peripheral neuropathy in my legs and losing weight would help take pressure off the nerves. I dont understand I thought bcbs was good insurance. Has anyone had surg in Peoria or Galesburg? please let me know your experiece.

DEANNKUSKE,

I originally started this thread due to all of the horror stories I had heard about BCBS-IL both on this website and from my surgeon. But.....I was approved (within two weeks of submitting) and am scheduled to have the surgery on the 5th. I think as long as you have your ducks in a row you will be fine. If you take the time to read through the posts on here you should find some of the more common reasons why people are denied and hopefully avoid them.

Good Luck!!!!

BCBS is strong on documentation of behavior modification. They require your primary MD to document on this with each visit. When you do your visits be sure your MD talks and documents on how you are mentally preparing yourself for surgery and what habits you are improving to be sucsessful in your diet.

BCBS wants to know what diet he has you on (low cal), what exercise you are doing, BMI, vital signs and Wt.

Just an update....I was submitted on Monday the 2, denied on the 3rd...so my drs office is submitting all my info to Obesity Law on Friday and are going to have them fight my appeal. Anyone else have experience with Obesity law I understand they are funded by Alergan. BTW my denial was for lack of detail on the 6 month visits to my pcp and unacceptable documentation for my weight history(my drs office used paper charting till 2007).

Hope that this plan works.

What type of lack of detail was missing?

Guess they just didn't think there was enough on the form (that my surgeon provided). My pcp didn't always fill it out completely...so my drs office printed out the drs dictation for each visit and it had a lot more detail in it. Soooooo..lesson for all those a/b to submit..make sure you pcp using lots of detail regarding your "diet" and his instructions for your weight loss.

Also my pcp until 2007 only used a graph chart in front flap of chart to track vitals...it does look very jr high...and not professional (ie not on letterhead) so that too is an issue. I haven't heard from obesity law today...i'm trying to be patient. just going to keep praying! Good luck to everyone else..and

god bless us one and all

just tired

best of luck to you all with bcbs-il. I am having a nightmare with them right now. I qualify in every way they require, but they declined me because my dr's notes on the 6 month thing weren't "specific" enough. My lap band surgeon has referred my case to an obesity law and advocacy attorney. Now i am waiting on that and really starting to get deeply depressed. My doctor has left her practice so if they deny again, i start over!!!!!!!:mad2:

I finally have an approval letter!! It took almost a year!! I am finally moving forward and going to "LOSE 2 REGAIN ME" !! YEA!!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
