An obervation on what scared most of us before our Lap-Band surgery.

Recommended Posts

Honestly, my biggest fear was that I wouldn't be able to eat one of my favorite things "steak". I have not found that to be a problem as long as it's cooked medium and I chew small pieces. I haven't had many problems with many foods and I'm pretty restricted.

I didn't add that to my reply to this thread, BUT OMG YES, I too have ALWAYS been scared of not making it through a surgery and especially weight loss surgery. That too was a fear. Thank God I came through and am having GREAT success with my band. I LOVE MY BAND and God for giving someone the brains to invent it.

Oh my gosh, now that you post this, I think I did worry most about, "What? I can't drink an extra large Baja Blast from Taco Bell anymore? What will I do at my favorite pizza buffet too???" That's really sad. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to be a pig anymore.

I will add though, with any surgery I have, I've always really worried about dying on the table. That's just me though. lol

Thanks for this interesting perspective!

Failure was my biggest fear prior to surgery. I educated myself on the band and what to expect, as well as what I could do before hand to get ready.

But going through all this and the thought of feeling good and going forward than having it all trashed with failure (this has been a typical cycle) was very scary.

Doc says I'm doing really well and ahead of schedule (their schedule I"m guessing) My first fill is the 19th of January and so far so good.

This! Steak and asparagus were two things someone mentioned at the first information seminar I ever went to. That was so disappointing to me - my two favorites foods ever! I was honestly going to let it hold me back from having the band.:sneaky:

I have had no problems with steak (cooked & eaten properly) or asparagus.

The anesthesia thing was a big scary thing for me. My daughter already lost her father many years ago. I was incredibly scared that something would happen to me and she'd be left with no parents. I kept telling myself "millions of people have surgery every day and nothing happens."

I am being banded in a few weeks and my fear is complications. I'm affraid of leaks and infections. I hope that when I meet with the doctor he will help me with these issues I'm having. I'm not affaid of dying because if I don't do something the weight is going to slowly kill me....

Great Topic! My surgery is scheduled for March 18th (submitting next week to BCBS MA) and I am afraid of SO many things...

1) I guess I should start with not getting approved. I have a date and I am so mentally prepared for this, I would be devastated if the news wasn't good. I meet all of the qualifications, however, so I'm trying to remain optimistic.

2) With PCOS and a lower BMI, what if it just doesn't work for me?

3) Will I REALLY be able to hide this from friends, (some) family, and co-workers?

4) Fear that I will have success, but will just hate the band because of the lifestyle changes. I can deal with counting calories, exercise, and smaller portions. I CANNOT wrap my brain around never being able to eat a sandwich again. The carbonation scares me too, particularly beer. How can I go to Fenway Park and not have a beer? The thought of PBing scares the living daylight out of me!

With all that said, I am so excited to get out of this body - to turn heads again, to not be on three prescription medications, to breathe better, to feel like going out with my friends again, to reverse the damage I did to my body over the last seven years, to live the life a 25 year-old should live.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
