Post op help

Recommended Posts

;)Hey everyone-I'm an official Bandster!!!

Today was one 1st day post op. The surgery went really well, was a bitten more extensive. Doctor had to remove quite a bit of adhesions from previous GB surgery.

Anyway, I heed some help with this post of thing. Right now I'm feeling pretty crummy. My neck, back, and shoulders ache. My stomach feels like i've done 1000 abb crunches, and tonight diarhhea started. I also have alot of gas (burping and other). I've only eatten Jello, chicken broth, popsicles and Water. I guess I'm suppose to be on this for 3 days.

Please, please, i need your imput. Is this what happened to most of you pre-operatively? When does the aches and pains go away?

Was the Clear Liquids necessary for 3days or were you able to have regular liquids? Did you have trouble sleeping?

I know it's been only one day but I'm concerned that there is nothing unusual going on.

Your guidance would be appreciated

Micki,

I think you will feel much better after the third day. I did. Are you taking pain medication? The pain in your neck, back and shoulders is probably gas from the surgery. Walk as much as you can. Take gas-x. I could have Protein Shakes on the 3rd day. Every doctor is different as to what they tell you to drink. I think your pain is normal and should let up very soon although you will be sore especially around the port area. Hope this helps to ease you mind. I had trouble sleeping because I had to sleep on my back for the first few nights and that was not my habit. When I could start turning over I slept much better.

Congratulations! Welcome to a new life!

I had most of those symptoms after surgery also. Walking helped me a lot to pass that gas. The hubby gave me a few excellent back rubs also! ;) I was only allowed to have diluted apple juice, Water or diluted gatorade type drinks for the first week. Maybe the broths are creating some of the gas....try to dilute them a little, it might help.

I didn't have Jello until after the first week and even then I let it disolve before swallowing. I think that was fear more than anything else.

Good luck.

Joyce that is what helped me. I found out here on lap band talk that walking and gas x will help with the gas. I made sure I bought if before surgery. For my clear liquids when I got home I had diluted crystal light and gatorade but they were so sweet I preferred the Water. The sugar free popsicles were a life saver thoguh. I agree that the port area will be sore for about 2 weeks but it everyday the soreness gets better. You will be surprised at how good you will feel in one week.

By the third day after surgery I began to feel more like myself again. Each day gets better and better. I was given in the hospital light grape juice and broth with Protein added.

Micki you said you had gb surgery. You had the RNY gastric bypass? My sister did and is now looking at the lap band because she had begin to gain weight.

Good luck Micki and welcome.

It took me about a week to feel like a normal human being again. I had all of the symptoms you described. The Gas-X & walking didn't get rid of the gas completely for me. They did help a little though. I used glycerine suppositories for the gas. They worked miracles! You're going to feel better so soon though! Each day is a little better! Good luck!

I had to do 2 meals of clear liquids in the hospital. Apple juice, broth and Jello. Then today before coming home I was switched to full liquids. Creamy Soups with no chunks, apple juice or any 100% juices, yogurt...plain no lumps or fruit, malt to meal runny, Protein Shakes, sugar free pudding & jello. V-8 diet Splash is good stuff too, sugar free koolaid, crystal light and the suagr free popsicles. My hubby was snacking on chocolate covered pretzels...and they looked gross! I like that feeling. I hope it lasts, because it will make this process alot easier. Chocolate is my down fall.

You are right Theresa. Eddy's makes an awsome sugar free triple chocolate ice cream as well....just have to eat small amounts because of the fat content but sure does satisfy the craving for chocolate.

Hello There,

I will be a bandster on thrusday - God willing. I am going to Monterey Mexico with Dr. Rumbaut.

I am especially anxious about the post op pain. What are you given for pain? I have Vicadan from a shoulder injury last month. Will that kill any of the pain? Will anyone in Mexico give us good painkillers for the pain?

Newbe here, my first day on the forum.

Have a Blessed Day.

Buffy

Micki,

I'm sure you are feeling better by now, and you've already been told that what you were going through is the norm. :) Each day will get better and better :D

Buffy,

Dr. Rumbaut will give you something that is great for the pain and doesn't mess up your head (at least that's what he gave me a year ago). It's not a pain pill like Vicoden, it's a muscle relaxer, that relaxes the muscles that are spasming and causing the pain (they are freaking out from being cut and having the port in them). What he gave me worked fantastically, and I didn't need it very long. I was greatful that it didn't cloud up my head as well.

marimaru, I wish my doc had given me a muscle relaxant because my port muscle was in such spasm for about 24 hrs that I had a hard time breathing. they gave me percocet and when I call them back that night due to the pain they told me just to keep taking them. Now I wish i had the antispasm med. I am not a wimp when it comes to pain so this really scared me

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
