Oblong.... just notice what doctors are against it..... not all docs are qualified to do this type of procedure/surgery and they have to still make a living. Gastric banding seems to be taking over the lead in the marketing and success of weight loss world!, for some this is wonderful but there are others whose business could hurt from this. Try not to doubt you decision here... Feb's not so far... stay on board here for support!

OK - New rule: no more watching weight loss programs! I watched that show "Ruby" today; the one where she's lost 60 pounds so far on the pre-packaged meals. Her doctor says, "that's what you would have lost with gastric bypass". I know that the whole thing is to push his pre-packaged meals and that it doesn't really teach anybody how to eat. The thing I don't get is why is it doctors seem to be so against WLS?

I'm not as freaked as I was... Kinda....

I like Ruby. Maybe she would have lost the same amount of weight with GB but she is getting b*tcher and b*tcher with each show. I hope she makes it but she is torturing herself with those hour glass meals.

I understand about the freaking out, my surgery is not until January 28th. I too watch the programs (that is in the past). I have battled weight since I was little, I have yo-yo'd 70 pounds up and down for years:frown:. So I guess I was good at dieting just bad at maintaining. This is not good for my health so I am looking forward to have the band as a tool to help me maintain.

I used to belong to a marathon running club that has the motto - Maintain, Maintain, Maintain. I hope to use that as a guideline for life in the future.

Nervous, scared a little - yes. Freaking out - no. Looking forward to a great future. Definitely.:cursing:

Any time you see one of the weight loss shows... turn it over to CNN and grab your computer and talk to us.

OK, so remember how I said "no more weight loss programs"?

So I'm watching TLC's "Half Ton" series, which seems to be a little more pro WLS. It's all gastric bypass and doesn't gloss over the risks, but at least they're not treating it like it's a cop-out, KWIM?

OK; only freaked out a teeny bit today.

Oh, man! I watched Discovery yesterday afternoon, and they had a marathon on the Brookhaven Weight Loss clinic. My heart went out to them because I'm in the same boat sort of. I only have 130 to loose; these people have twice that or more, so I'm hesitant to say we're in the same boat. They'd take one look at me and say, "get out and swim!". The director was not at ALL supportive to those wanting WLS, and every time it was mentioned by the narrator or the center's director, it was reffered to as a "quick fix." Not at all encouraging.

I don't know. This is the court of last resort for me. I've done the diets, I've done the exercise, I've lost weight, but it doesn't stay off. The way I see it, the Lap Band is a tool to make sure that once the weight comes off, it stays off. But what if? I see posts on the board where people are having trouble eating and throwing up, people thinking they've wasted money on the procedure, etc. If this doesn't work, I've wasted a buttload of money, and it's yet another failed attempt at loosing weight. I've fought with my body my whole life. Maybe I'm just supposed to be fat? I don't know.

Then there's the theory that if I don't do anything at ALL, I'll still be mornidly obese and possibly larger.

I'm freaking out. It doesn't help that surgery is so far away (February). HELP!

I had never seen this particular series before but just yesterday they had a marathon on TLC so I watched it off and on throughout the day while I was doing other things.

You are sure right about the words "quick fix" for WLS. Everytime it was mentioned they used those words like as if it is something dirty and terrible. The doctor running the clinic is definitely anti WLS.

Then again, I can't help but wonder if WLS, while not a quick fix, is not the right kind of help for someone who has such a food addiction that they will spend years confined to their beds and just keep eating. If a person ever gets to that stage of obesity and WLS is used . . . I think serious and intensive psychological counseling is absolutely essential first and foremost. Actually I think it is helpful for all of us who have battled morbid obesity whether we had surgery or not to have appropriate support structures and counseling in place.

I saw an episode where one guy had Richard Simmons come in and chastise his wife for allowing him to go back and gain after he had been successful in the past. Richard Simmons was angrier with the wife than the husband who gained the weight, and the husband was really upset about it. My first thought was . . . you should be angry with the person who is eating instead of the family members that are there.

After I gave it more though I do see the point. If I ever got to the stage where all I ever did was stay in bed and eat . . . I would hope that my husband would have the good sense to bring me carrot sticks and crystal light instead of a large pizza and 2 liter of pop.

I think it would be impossible for someone to stay in bed for years without someone supporting the habit and enabling them. Without support, they would have to eat take-out all the time unless they had tons of money in the bank. I don't know how much disability would pay a person who was bed-bound but I doubt it would support a place to live, utilities and enough food to cover that kind of addiction. I feel that a person enabling that kind of lifestyle does bear some responsibility for their actions as well . . . even if they think they are doing it out of love or have no other choice.

Any thoughts???

OK - New rule: no more watching weight loss programs! I watched that show "Ruby" today; the one where she's lost 60 pounds so far on the pre-packaged meals. I watch Ruby too. I really don't think that those hour glass meals are going to help her in the long run unless she is on them for a life-time. I think it is OK to start off that way . . . but hunger is hunger is hunger and if you can't learn to eat normally from what is available you will always to in danger of backsliding.

I lost weight as well as she did using those kinds of diet mechanisms (tight and restrictive diets that last as long as you have the motivation to follow them). Do these programs work, absolutely . . . for a time until you can't get past those feelings of deprivation and start back sliding.

Banding has really and truly worked for me because I can eat real foods and make healthy choices from things that are available to me every day at the grocery store, in restaurants, at dinner parties, etc and I am not hungry and I am not unsatisfied. If I want to overeat . . . I just can't. I am no longer battling constant hunger and feelings of deprivation to lose the weight. It is like the best diet ever in that I am fully satisfied and don't have to try and ignore constant hunger.

People say that WLS is the quick fix or the easy way out. Now that I have been there and done that I would have to both agree and disagree. It is hard in that you have to make good food choices and do your exercise, period. It is so easy in that you are not battling yourself constantly with hunger and deprivation. It is totally workable and has been a blessing for me.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
