Tuesday Morning Surgery for me - OMG !

Recommended Posts

Well, tomorrow @ 5:30am - I will have my butt at the hospital for surgery! I did the 'only' fluids today and I have NO idea how people can do this for a week prior to surgery. I didn't have hunger pains, but the diarrhea is almost uncontrollable. I guess if I had to do this a week, I'd experience hunger pains too. Kudo's to the folks who have do the fluids for a week or more. Thank you all, for your support and mostly sharing your inner thoughts with the rest of the world. I've been reading everyone's posts and have found it to be of incredible value. Thank you all! I'm off to bed to catch a couple of hours sleep. I'll be back soon. Good luck to everyone who's scheduled this week and next. :)

Hi Everyone - surgery was a breeze BUT on the 2nd day out of surgery I started esophagus spasms. Good Lord, I thought I was having a heart attack! It hurts every time I swallow or burp, it feels like someone is squeezing your chest. It doesn't last long but WOW it stops me in my tracks. Today is the 6th day and it's better but not gone - can't wait to catch more than 5 hours of sleep at a time. I hope your all well and enjoying your summer. Thanks for your good wishes and I'm sure I'll be back to 'normal' soon.

Hi guys, can I ask, why do you have to do liquids only the week before surgery?

I haven't done that and I'm having the surgery this Friday in Mexico. Should I start on liquids now, I wonder, and do them for the next 4 days?

I haddn't asked them about it and they never mentioned it???

every doctor is different. my doc required it because he had a self pay patient wake up with out a band because he was unable to manipulate her liver to put the band on. her liver was too fatty. He has you do liquid protien drinks for two weeks pre op to help prevent this from ever happening again. You body stores fat at your liver and esp if you binge eat it will be huge and too big or very difficult for the surgeon to apply your band. it is only a precautionary thing but worth it i think. the fear of waking up not being banded scared me into sticking to the diet as bet I could.

not all docs require it. call your doc and ask what he/she suggests.

Best of luck to you in your surgery!

Tina - Congrats on your Band ! You sound like you had a heck of a time too. I can't imagine going back to work until these esophagus spasms are gone. I hope you don't have to work a full day, you'll be beat! I only did liquid the day before surgery and now have graduated to pureed foods. Do you feel a restriction? I think I do, I can't tell yet. I'm not hungry but I think it's cause I know it's going to hurt when I swallow.

I weighed myself 5 days after surgery and lost 21 1/2 lbs, that has got to be water!

Some day soon I'll be able to get both legs over that darn hurdle !

I was banded on July 26th too, in St. Petersburg, Florida. Definitely a busy day for bands - there were 4 other women there for it too - we had a great time together - before and after. Good luck to ya'll.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
