Cali Bandsters Unite!!

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I just got the authorization from my insurance company and now have a surgery date --- Nov. 8!! They had originally told me in Aug. that I would have to complete a 6-month online diet before they would authorize it, but apparently they changed their mind. I am so excited I can hardly stand it! I will have to drive 3 1/2 hours, though, to get to the doctor/hospital, and therefore will not be going there for the support groups, etc. I am looking for a support group or person close by that is newly banded or will be soon that I could maybe chat with. Is there anyone out there near the Ventura County area? Or anyone going to the Dr. LaPort group in Fountain Valley? If there is no one, I know that I will still have this incredible group to turn to so I will be OK. I have learned so much from you all already!

Thanks, Karen

Welcome Eileen!! That is wonderful news about your surgery and weight loss---you are an inspiration for the rest of us "pre-banders"!! I'm surprised about the hunger, but I'm sure you will adjust fairly quickly. Where do you live? Do you have a support group or will you be getting your support from this forum?? Keep posting and let us know how you are progressing. And congratulations on your great start!!

Karen,

Thank you for your warm welcome. :D It's not so much that I'm hungry but that you have to fight with your brain to tell it that your not hungry. because my tummy is fine but my brain is hungry and that is what your fighting with. I live in pasadena area, I go to support group 2 times a month I don't think i'm going to be able to make it tomorrow but I will the first monday of next month.

thank you again

Eileen,

From what I read on this forum there are a lot of variations in lapband experiences. Everyone says to give yourself time to heal before you make any judgments regarding how the band is working. Did you do any pre-op diet? If not, then maybe your stomach is just having a natural reaction to the drastic reduction of food. :hungry: Please let us know how long it is taking you to not feel so hungry! Can you drink more to feel full, or maybe have more Protein to satisfy the hunger? Good luck, and let us know what works for you!

Karen,

I did not have a pre-op diet, I was very healthy thank goodness, and I guess that is why I didn’t have to have the pre-op diet even though I didn’t have the pre-op diet I lost 9 lb before surgery. My TUMMY is full I know it is I’m drinking the correct amount of liquid, and Jell-O. so I’m doing great but my head hasn’t caught up yet. It will Thank you for your nice words

You are welcome, Eileen! How did you lose 9 pounds before surgery if you didn't do a pre-op diet? Did you do what I am doing and just start cutting back before surgery anyway? I am still betting that your hunger problem is due to the sudden drastic drop in calories, or else you aren't getting enough Protein, which is supposed to help us feel full. What are you drinking for your protein and how much are you getting?

Karen,

I don’t know how I lost the nine pounds because I was going out to dinner for almost two weeks before surgery. But I was eating healthy from the day I got approved for surgery. I’m eating lots of protean my mom made me some chicken broth with lots of chicken and not as salty as the one from the hospital and the can ones. I’m also drinking my shakes which every shake has 26g of protean. I’m okay on that end.

Well then, I am stumped since it sounds as if you are doing everything right. Maybe someone else on this site who has their lap band can give you some suggestions? Has anyone else been hungry right after surgery? Did you find something that helped?

Hi CJay, Not very close but we wish you the best on Nov. 2. We live in Truckee and both have Lap Bands. Wife has had hers since "01". She has loss 85 pounds her goal. I had my Band done This year and have loss 68 pounds. 20 pounds to go I don't see any problem. We had Dr. Billy do both here in Truckee. He comes to Truckee once a month from Ventura.

Smiling, Konrad & Judy

Hi Cjay, Good luck on your surgery. I had my done on October 2, 2006 and have my first fill on November 2. I live in San Leandro and my surgery was done by Dr. Morton at Stanford. It is the best decision I have made so far. I feel great and am actually not that hungry. It's amazing how little food a person actually needs to sustain themselves. Keep us posted on how you are doing.

Hi all,

I am glad you are finding some other bandsters nearby! I live in the Ventura area and there is no one I know having the lapband surgery here. I am OK, though, since I have this group. Good luck to all who are having their surgery soon...especially you, CJay. Mine is Nov. 8 in Fountain Valley and I can't wait! Shelly and Konrad, it is great to hear how well you are doing. Thanks for the encouragement! ;-)

Karen

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
