Has anyone heard of a band leaking? Something is up with mine. I have had 5 fills and I feel the restriction while in the office but immediately after I feel nothing. I am able to eat MUCH more than I should. There were questions the first couple of fills as to whether or not he hit the port, so we thought maybe that was the problem. But the last 2 fills I am 100% sure he hit it but I still have zero restriction. I asked him if it could be leaking and he said maybe. I go back next week for a Fluor fill, so we should know at that time what is going on. I am wondering how common this is and if insurance will pay anything to have it replaced.

I'm sorry about your leak  ... On the plus side, your port leaking would not be your fault and should be covered by insurance. I asked my insurance a lot of questions before I got the band. Good Luck!

At my first fill, it was discovered that the tube between band and port was detached and that the Fluid was leaking into my chest cavity. I had a second operation which replaced the tube and resited the port. I had 4.5 ml fill at that operation, and another 1 ml fill about six weeks later. All is now well and the band works perfectly.

The second operation was easy and nowhere near as big a deal as the first one. I had mine done on the NHS here in the UK, so I can't comment on your insurance position, except to express the opinion that you shouldn't have to pay for something that didn't work in the first place.

....also...your doctor should be removing all the liquid in your band before a fill to make sure what is recorded is still in there! That's the easy way to tell if it's leaking and my doctor does it every single time I go in for a fill! Isn't yours?

Terri is correct. Your doctor needs to check to see if the correct amount of Fluid is really in your band. I recently had a port revision because my band had a leak. I will now do all of my fills under flouro. Sorry I can't speak to the insurance question because I was self-pay.

Maguirre67 I believe you were banded at Mercy, do you have any problem with the hospital? Can you lend me some help? I go to a seminar there next week.

My doctor takes out the old fill to see what is left. Then she places that back in and adds new fill. She does not do this under fluor. Some how I lost .5 cc. Who knows where it went. My third fill is on January 14, so we will see what is left.

Does your doctor take out the old fill to see what is actually in there?

Since I had a leak, all my fills from now on have to be under fluoro. I'm sure there can always be a little lost but if you're missing several ccs, I think that is a big problem. A cc can change the difference between no restriction and "sweet spot."

We are suppose to take out all my fill too this next appointment. I mean I have lost restriction again actually feeling very hungry and even lost it for a few days with eating. I have called for an earlier date than the 9th of Jan and they moved it to the 6th. I too think I have a leak or something but when we did the last fluro it showed nothing like a leak actually it showed restriction (went down slow) that has since went away. I have never felt "full" for any amount of time which is weird. I will find out next week hopefully if I actually have the 10cc in my 9cc band or I have a leak or whatever may be the problem in 6 months I have only lost 35lbs :tongue2: not what I had anticipated to have lost by now all in all it's a loss but still I have so much to lose!!! Good luck hope you just need a much more agressive fill is all....

Checking the fill level is so quick and easy as a means to see what is in there. I ask them to check mine every time I go now . . . but I did have to ask them to do it because they don't normally pull it out as standard procedure.

I am not sure that the fluoro would show so much regarding a leak unless you have such a big leak that they can see an increase in the flow from your pouch to your stomach over the few seconds that they are watching it.

HEATHER-

NOW taking me back to when I had the second fluro and it went faster than the fluro before I had and I even mentioned that it went faster than the week before!!!! GOSH I am going to not be so scared to speak up I mean after all I only have 6 months left this needs to be fixed and I need my sweet spot!!!! I am convinced I have a leak seriously I mean I am suppose to have 10ccs in a 9cc band and I was very concerend that he didn't want to pull it out and measure it last month due to my weight loss I hope they are not hiding something this is my life they are dealing with. I have NO RESTRICTION, lost it, nada!!!! AND NO WEIGHT LOSS either I am very concerned too..I am going to make them take time with me next week seriously!!!!

Slinderella, my leak did not show up under fluoro. In fact the surgeon told me unless the leak is really significant, it usually won't. I know you're frustrated because I was incredibly angry. I kept gaining and losing the same two pounds over and over again (6mos). Even worse, True Results doesn't charge for fills for the first year...but after that it is $100.00 a pop. The only weight I was losing was in my wallet.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
