Kaiser Richmond Pre-op

Good morning all!!! Monique I can't wait to see you.

Carmen welcome! I think the band is just a tool the reminds us not to over eat but we have to do all the work and it's really hard. If you start snacking you could eat all day because the band can't stop you from small amounts of food and the calories will add up. I suggest you write everything you eat and count you calories. Yes I do feel like I am dieting all the time but I also realize that if I don't the scale will not go down. This is why we all need support from our family, friends and weight loss community! But it sounds like you are doing great so just keep up the good work.

Lee I really wanted to go to the meeting but got back late from picking up my son from school. Thank you so much for the info in the next Wednesday meeting I will definitely try to make it there I hope many of you will because I think seeing each other will motivate all of us to do good in this journey we are traveling together.

Riley! Hey lady! Congratulations!!!!! How sweet! How's life?

Hey girlie! Thanks, I'm loving life . . most of the time. Lots of upheaval and change and uncertainty right now, it's weird to be between houses but at least both boys are moving out. Dont know where the older one is going yet, but the younger one (almost 19) has just informed he's quit his job and is moving to WA with an online girlfriend whom he's never met, who has no job, and a child, who lives with her mom. uhhhhh . . . and he has purchased his one-way ticket and shipped his belongings already. Kids! He refuses to go for a visit this month and wait to move until next month when he maybe had a job?? Oh and he doesnt drive, either. You cant tell him anything tho . . he is desparate for my blessing and I want to support him but dont want to see him make such a hasty choice! He had a different girlfriend until 3 months ago, now he says he really loves this one and wants to spend the rest of his life with her . . . .

Why am I posting this on the Lap Band site? Cause we all need to realize that this is just a TOOL!! even with a lap-band and the weight loss and counseling and all of that, and all, we still have stressful stuff that happens and we still try to feed the stress and anxiety! In & Out burger for lunch, for Pete's sake! (no bun of course) The one thing that I CAN say is that my band does not let me stress eat!! No sirree. Nothing is going down until I relax, and then only about a golf ball fits. The band DEFINATELY does its job. I just wish I would get good at doing mine again!!

Riley you are doing fine:-). Give him your blessing and few life lines, when he bumps his head he will come back. But the hope and wish is that all goes well with him there. He is taking leap of faith and all you can do is give him your blessing and it will help motivate his success.

So this week I have been really good, i lost 6lbs and I know the band is working. I am at 5cc. I am waiting to drop 15-20 more and then go back to Dr.Park for a fill :-).

Coming here and seeing you guys doing well and hanging in there helps. I see folks are not posting as much. I wish you all good health.

Reggie

Riley... OMG! He is taking a leap of faith. Like Reggie said...give him a few life lines and he will return...TRUST!

Reggie-hey lady! How are you? I see you are making good progress! Whats the secret? I could stand to lose 6lbs too! Lol

I have come to the conclusion that I have One Bite Syndrome! It's when the first bite gets stuck! Ugh! This happens to me quite often! Even when I am eating things that are totally on program! I have been doing some research on here and have found some useful strategies! The first being to consume something HOT before eating and another being to wait at least 2 minutes after taking the first bite. I have to do something the pain is killing me. If nothing else...it may be he cause of me being able to lose a few! Not a good way to lose but....I'll take it!

Have a great, thoughtful weekend!

Hi Everyone,

I had the sleeve surgery on Oct. 20. During the surgery, Dr. Baggs saw a nodule on my liver and biopsied. it. It came back cirrhosis. Then, a few days later, I learned I had liver cancer. As a light drinker, this was shocking. My liver specialist told me that being overweight is as bad for the liver as being a heavy drinker. Hopefully, early detection will save my life. I won't know more until my CAT scan results for Monday's tests are back.

Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers,

Karen

Karen,

I will definitely hold you in my prayers. Your Sleeve surgery sounds like a blessing because they caught the liver cancer. Early detection is great. I know it doesn't feel great to you now, but at least you now have a fighting chance of remission before it spreads. Dr. Baggs did a biopsy of my liver during my Sleeve surgery too. I was lucky and came back clean. Many people are light drinkers and get liver cancer. Some are heavy drinkers and escape it. This doesn't sound like anything that you did to yourself. None of it matters now as your drinking days are over.

Kaiser is a good team. They will do everything to get you into remission.

Other than this crisis, how are you doing with your Sleeve recovery? I'm really sorry you're having to face this while learning to deal with your new Sleeve.

Hey Ya'll, so good to hear from you. Riley, Reggie, Mo, Beatriz....I did a quick scan. :) Sounds like you all are doing well

I'm doing ok, really trying to knock off a few more pounds before the holidays. I've been going to Zumba twice a week and boot camp on saturdays... food wise is so so just need to stay away from those sliders. I have such a problem with dense Proteins getting stuck. I'm gonna try and make it to richmond group next week. Its our neighborhood watch meeting but maybe I can do both.

Maybe we can all make an effort to check in at least once a week and get our support system back.

have a nice week!!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
