Why is my hair falling out?

Recommended Posts

I've been banded for three months now, I've only lost 30lbs. but my hair is starting to fall out. Everytime I wash it it looks like I killed a cat in my shower. Granted I have a lot of hair, but I can tell it's getting thinner and I'm a bit concerned. My eating has been healthier, although I don't eat as much red meat as I used to, I do take Omega 3 suppliments and Vitamins regularly. Should I be alarmed, and is there any thing I should be doing.

It is normal to lose hair. There are different reasons for it. Some say it is low Protein intake. Others say it is from the trauma of having surgery. There are some people on here that swear by biontin. I figure it is probably a combination of both. Everyone that I have talked to says that it does grow back so don't be alarmed. I hope this helps.

Thanks, that does make me feel much better, I only thought hair loss was for people who lost alot of weight very quickly. I haven't been doing very well on my Protein, so that actually speaks volumns to me. What exactly is biontin? Is it a supplement, and where can I get it?

Thanks again for your reply!

It's no problem. Biotin is a supplement. I have seen it at Wal-Mart. It is in most multi-vitamins, but they don't have as much biotin in them. One of them that I saw at Wal-Mart actually said for hair and nails. It has a couple of other Vitamins in it that are supposed to be good for the hair. With that and upping your Protein, you should see improvement in your hair soon. I hope this helps.

I am losing my hair too. I had my surgery in July and I have been concerned lately. I bought Hair and nail Vitamins yesterday at Walmart. I talked to one of my good friends (who happens to be a pharmacist) about it tonight and she said that you can't take too much of the vitamins in that supplement. So I guess I will see what happens...

I too, had Hair loss in the beginning. I have very thick hair and I could actually tell a big difference. I have always taken Vitamins, so I didn't think that had anything to do with it. I am a meat eater, and still am. So I am not sure that has anything to do with it either. I was also very slow at losing weight. After 2 1/2 yrs. I still haven't reached goal. So all these theories have been tested by me(the lab rat). So truly, I have no clue why this happens, but I can assure you all, that it stops as fast as it started. Where the hair was thinning is now back to the way it was before. Who knows! Good Luck

I am glad to read this thread because I am experiencing the same thing. I have lots of hair and the only person to notice that it is so thin is my hubby but oh well....glad to know it will grow back! :)

Isn't it wonderful that our husbands notice when our hair thins, but they never notice the new haircut or haircolor.lol

Take Biotin and zinc together. I just got a two for one deal at CVS- I bought Natures' Bounty high potency Biotin 1000 mcg. What it does is promotie carbohydrate, Protein, and fat metabolism and helps promote healthy skin and hair. I read that right off the bottle.

My hair started to fall out about 2 months after surgery. Everytime I washed it, there would be hair all over my hands. I too was concerned but have read that this is normal and should stop after a couple of months. I would recommend eating more protien. My doctor said Hair loss is from change in diet (lack of protein) and also trauma from surgery and should stop after a few months. I am now 4 months post-op and I am not losing hair anymore. He was right.

I was 2 months post-op and my hair started falling out. It has to be the stress of surgery only. I have taken Biotin from day one and get over 90g of Protein a day. I am waiting for it to stop, around 4 mos it sounds like! I also just started "hair & nails" Vitamins, they help it grow faster I have found, so maybe replacement hair will be sooner!

It almost seems to hit us "slow loosers" more!

Good luck to everyone!

My hair is coming out too!!! I am almost 6 months post op, and it started about 3 months ago with me... Thank goodness, i had really thick hair, but i can really tell a difference and it has really been bothering me...it is in the shower, it is all over all the floors...the vacuum cleaner really gets a workout..lol

i'm so glad for this post because i'm going to try the biontin vitamins...

I think anesthesia changed my hair TEXTURE as well.. i have always had big, thick wavy hair.... my gallbladder was taken out one month before my lap band and ever since that surgery, my hair has wanted to be flat and straight...it tries to curl, but just can't quite get there... has anyone else had the texture change as well? I thought maybe after the lap band surgery the anesthesia would shock it back into normal curls, but no such luck...lol

Thanks for the posts! I'm going to try the Vitamins

Yes, the texture of mine is horrible!! I used to have super huge curly hair and now it's falling out and like breaking totally off at the roots. It's wirey and awful, I am so bummed. I've only lost like around 50 lbs and it's been a little over 43 months. I am totally bummed out about my slow weight loss and falling out hair. I take Biotin and eat my protien and it's still falling out.

I had surgery in May and mine has been falling out for 4 months with no end in sight. Everyone keeps saying it will get better, but it's not. The doctors are no help. I have taken every Vitamin I know of and it has not helped one bit.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
