Can we carry a card?

Recommended Posts

If you go to obesityhelp.com you can print out restaurant cards. It't under quick links on the bottom of the page.

I also would rather take home leftovers, so I have never used my card.

I carry information about my band in my wallet but I also wear a mecical ID Bracelet. If you are in a accident, the paramedics will not look in your wallet unless directed there by a ID bracelet.

Hope this helps.

I have a card from my doctor for the resturants. I also go a medical alert Bracelet that has the information on it and my doctors phone number, my doctor has somebody that monitors the phone 24/7. I got my bracelet from www.laurenshope.com . They have lots of pretty bracelets to choose from and some for men too.

I went to a Chinese buffet a few weeks ago and told them I can only eat a small amt. The waitress had said to go and get the amount of food I was gong to eat. When I got back to the table I asked the waitress and manager to come over. The manager said it was one price for 1 plate or 4. I now no loner go to that buffet.I get take out and have 2 meals. BTW, most childrens or appetizer menu's are fried or Pasta dishes. so I have found that it is alot easier to get a regular meal and take a doggie bag home. I also ask for my beverage(water w/lemon) as soon as the waitress comes so you can drink before the meal arrives .

I'd be mortified if anyone at dinner with me mentioned to the waiter that I had WLS. Everyone is different, I guess. For me, I'd rather keep my health situation private and just order off the menu what looks good. Why on earth would any restaurant mind if we wanted to order only appetizers? And I agree about the child's menu being full of yuck. As for buffets, I just pass and if I'm really hungry I'll order something a la carte. Restaurants that ONLY offer buffets are not common here, so it's not something I've ever run up against.

And in any event, no restaurant is obligated to honor this request. That's why I'd die before asking. Imagine getting into a pissing match about this with a waiter or manager? Yuck!!

I have only been to a buffet type restaurant since my surgery and

they(cashier and manager) refused

to let me buy a child's portion (they did offer me the senior citizens cost)

even after showing my card. I ate my 2 oz of salmon and vowed never

to return.

What my hubby and I do in "regular" restaurants is he will order a full

entree and I will order a salad only. He is a light eater so he gives me

enough of his steak/chicken/whatever to satisfy me.

I agree that most kids meals and appetizers are awful choices for us although

they are about the right size portion wize. It would be nice to just go into

a restaurant and get a plain old piece of chicken with no sides. I guess that's

why we have a stove at home (as hard as I try to avoid it!)

We receive one card from the Medical Center that includes this statement: "We are requesting that if you have a senior and/or childrens menu, that you would allow our patient to order from one of those since they are unable to consume large portions of food". We also receive the I.D. card from INAMED that has a graphicictire of an installed band on it. I choose to use the card from the medical center, and have only had to pull it out once.

aaamom -- sorry for not seeing your question sooner. I travel a lot and have never had my port set off the alarms at the security checkpoint... But, I have never been asked to move over for the special search. In that case, I am thinking the port might cause the wand to sensor... but they would probably just think it is the underwire in my bra since my port is not far from that location.

Thanks so much ! I haven't travelled since I received my band (May 23) and am planning on doing so hopefully soon. I have this fear I will set off all sorts of alarms at the airport !!!! I really don't want to go into my whole Lap-Band saga with the security guards!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
