Amount of restriction when band was placed?

  1. 1. Amount of restriction when band was placed?

    • I had a lot of restriction with band placement
    • I had some restriction with band placement
    • Other than being sore, couldn't tell I had been banded

Was banded on Monday, Nov 3rd with the Realize band. My surgeon confirmed proper placement with a contrast swallow test on the fluoroscope. He said I may have some restriction from the swelling, but generally I would have nothing until my first fill in 6 weeks or so.

Anyone have restriction immediately following band placement? My band was placed with NO fill... empty.

This is my first time using this site so please bear with me. I was banded on Friday and went back to work today (Tuesday). I am sore, but moreso am STARVING!!! Slim fast is not cutting it. HELP!!!

I am 3 1/2 weeks out and still have alot of restriction. Even when I'm starving, I can only get about a 1/2 cup of food in.

I had surgery on 10/29/08. My doctor placed 1.5cc in my band at the time of surgery. It became very tight after surgery and I was very nauseated. I had to have the 1.5 cc's removed. I went back on 12/5/08 for my first fill and they put back in the 1.5cc's they originally took out. Now I feel no restriction at all. I go back for another fill on 1/2/09. I am hoping to feel some restriction after that fill. My weight loss has been at a stand still :)

I am so glad I found this thread. I feel like such a light weight. I am day four out of surgery and cannot even take a sip of Water without seriouse tightness in chest (I guess this is what they call restriction). I haven't had an ounce of protien, I cannot even get liquids in. I know someone else who had the surgery and she was eating mushies at day 3. I cannot even eat two spoonfulls of Jello without feeling backed up. I know I should be thankful, but at same time, my lower stomach is growling and has terrible hunger pains, but I just can't seem to get anything down to it. What the Heck??????? Why is there such a difference between people?

I am not an expert by know means but I think you should talk to your doctor. You need to be drinking plenty of fluids so you do not dehydrate! Did he fill your band at surgery?? If he did he may need to unfill a little!

The first two weeks, I was full with very little little liquid or Soup. Now I am close to 3 weeks and the appetite seems to be picking up because I can eat an entire can of tuna at one time! I would much rather get 30 grams of Protein from that than a protein shake! I just won't eat albacore too much so that I don't OD on mercury! Supposedly I got a bit of fill at surgery, but I don't feel much restriction now.

I was banded on the 5th of Dec. and haven't had much hunger at all since being banded. I am sure some is due to swelling but it sure does help going through these 2 weeks of liquid phases. My band like everyone elses was placed with no fill.

I lost 56 pounds pre op and got banded on the 8th of december 2008. I am still supposed to be on liquid but its driving me nuts because i can eat just fine as I have discovered. Call it retardation but I ate out today with my wife who was banded with me and while we didnt eat much we were able to eat without much restriction we split a quasadilla and it was just fine. is this normal or am I a freak I know I have the large and she has the small but I am feeling normal hunger and liquid just isnt doing it for me.

Bubba:

It's probably time for a fill for you. Once the swelling from surgery goes down alot of banded people get their hunger back. Call your doctor and get a fill soon.

Best wishes for you and your band. I love mine!

Sue

I was also banded on November 3rd. I have had a lot of restriction from about two weeks after the surgery. I am 7 weeks out and I burp constantly. I have to be careful with solids and only eat about a 1/4 to 1/2 a cup or less at meals. I have to eat very tiny bits over a 1/2 hr in order to keep it down and my liquids have to be done in tiny sips also. I am glad that I read your blog because now I don't feel like I am alone. I went to the Dr. at 7 weeks and he did not fill my band because I lost too much weight and I have enough restriction now. Isn't it great though - I lost too much weight!!! I wonder if anyone will ever say that I am too thin?? On my way, though. Keep in tough.

I was banded on October 6 and have had no restriction. My first fill is next week and I'm HOPING I start to lose weight. Everything now is pretty much the same as it was before and I'm hanging in there for the fill, otherwise, I would be feeling very discouraged.

I am feeling the same exact way!!! I cannot get my first fill until last week in January, but I feel as though I can eat anything, just smaller portions, this is soooo strange I would never have expected anything like this, I am always hungry!:tongue_smilie:

Yes, definitely, swelling makes sense, that is why they don't start you out with some restriction. (my guess)

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
