Surgery Scheduled 11/4/08

Recommended Posts

After a lot of back and forth with the insurance company (9 months) I'm finally scheduled for the band on 11/4. I start the liver shrink diet tomorrow. I'm excited & nervous but mostly worried about getting through the next 2 weeks. Wondering what I'll feel like right after surgery, and how long until I can go back to work, (I have a sit down all day office job).

Congrats! I am set for surgery on 11/3 after a full one year of doctor supervised weight loss! I have the same concerns as you! I was told just to diet....no more than 1200 cal a day and lose 10lbs or more by then! It worries me if I do ok at that.....just so many things to worry about !

That is strange how some get such detailed diet plans and others are not so structured! I am going to be very good on my diet....shakes and no junk.

I was on a 3 week liver shrink diet that was more austere...2-3 EAS Carb Control AdvantEDGE shakes a day, 3 oz of lean fish chicken or turkey, and 1 cup of green veggies. And 64 oz (at least) of Water. THATS it. no Condiments. no butter. No fruit. It's hard, but do it because it is important to make sure your liver can be moved out of the way so the band can be properly placed!

AND post op I felt great....little to no pain, etc. Walk a lot! I took 2 doses of darvocet on day 2 but otherwise liquid tylenol (or distracting myself) did the trick. Did I say walk a lot? move around!

I hope you both have smooth sailing and love your bands!

I'm sure if you do what your doctor says, you'll be fine!

The diet you followed sounds like the same one I have. I'm going to stick to it no matter what. How are you doing now? Was the first couple weeks after surgey like?

I'll be thinking about you. After all the effort we made to get to this far it would be silly for us to cheat now. Good luck!

I think you meant me by this? If not, please accept my apologies!

If so...post op the first 2 weeks was pretty awful, at least for me. I didn't even get Protein the 1st week By the 2nd week we were allowed Protein shakes, Water, broth, SF Jello and popsicles, clear unsweetened Decaf beverages. Let me tell you that's not much to live on. It was tough but I realized I had to stick to it to allow the sutures holding my band in place a chance to heal. Once I could have mushies I went wild. I "gained" 10 pounds in the 4 weeks of mushies, soft, and then regular foods. Once I got my first fill (not much, still no restriction) the doc who was unfazed by my gain said he wanted me to QUIT snacking...eat whatever but no Snacks, and now 1 week into that I've lost 9 of my 10 pounds gained. I don't have restriction but I'm not having a hard time...I know I will have it!

I love my band. Dearly! Just hang in there during the tough post op times. It isn't easy, I won't pretend. BUT it gets better and it feels so good to lose weight!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
