Do you weigh your food or just measure it?

Recommended Posts

Do most of you weigh your food? If so, which food scale do you use. I have just been measuring mine, but thought maybe that is what my problem is.

It depends on what it is. If I am supposed to have 3 ounces of chicken, turkey, fish, etc., I weigh it. For my chicken and tuna salads, vegetables, cereals, and fluids (of course) I use a measuring cup. It is kind of confusing when things are listed in ounces, because that could be a measure of volume OR weight. Cups and divisions of cups, teaspoons and tablespoons are straightforward, but ounces......

I hope to NOT weigh mine. If I wanted to weigh and count I'd still be doing WW, honestly! The thought of forever having to count each cracker out or put back 1/2 ounce of chicken left me bored and exasperated. HOWEVER if I find i'm not losing then checking portions is a great idea, and useful to rope me back in. I agree weighing is the best way; and often you get MORE when you weigh it than if you just use a measuring cup.

The have inexpensive electronic scales at Amazon and I'm sure you can find them locally at places like Target or Wal-mart.

GinaJ you've lost a LOT of weight, though...are you sure you have a "problem"? Looks to me like you have things going your way!

My weight loss is from June when I went back on WW. Since starting the preop diet, and after banding, I have not lost much at all.

You've only had the band for a month! The first 6 weeks or so are for healing, not weight loss. You will lose once you get fills! Give yourself a break, here! You'll (probably) have the band the rest of your life. You need to let your body heal and the band settle in place properly before you start worrying again about losing.

I do a visual check on what a serving size should look like (deck of cards, palm of hand, etc). If I am feeling unsure about something I will weigh or measure. I have a small kitchen scale - I've had it for years, that I use to weigh my food.

You can pick food scales up pretty reasonably at any of the "marts".

You now, at the start I will measure because I'll be learning anew what "full" means. But after a bit, no. I plan to go "scale" free.

I just started the soft diet stage today (scrambled eggs, soft meat etc). I asked my nutritionist if I should be worried about calories or weights of my food and she said no all I need to do is measure. I am supposed to have 1/4 - 1/3 cup Protein and if I am still hungry 2 tblsp of fruit and 2 crackers or 1/4 piece toast. I had bought a small food scale at Target but I took it back.

I was told to measure, not weigh. I'm mostly measuring now, but if I have something like an egg, I just have one, so in some instances I'm not measuring. I think after a period of time, I'll not have to unless my weight loss stalls or something.

Once you are restricted your stomach doesn't hold much. But before then i don't think it's that important. I have no restriction whatsover but have read that's common with my style band. I'm looking forward to 10/9 and my first fill!

What kind of band do you have? I have the realize band, 9cc. Your first fill, don't expect to much. I just had my first fill on the 15th and got 3 1/2cc and I barely have any restriction at all. Luckyly, I have an appointment this coming Thursday to have another adjustment.

my dietician told me, that no more than 1 cup per meal, i am using a 200ml container, and make sure that i dont eat over that amount of food.this is at the moment satisfying me,i try to make sure that i fit all the food groups into this amount.

Sassymama I have the AP Lap band size large and I think it holds 14cc's. SO it's no wonder i have absolutely NO restriction yet. I know the first fill probably won't do too much to me, but at least it will mean I'm finally on the road! I don't want my doc to be TOO aggressive with the fills; it can cause bad side effects. So I'll be happy for a gradual tightening!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
