Thanks.

I just thought it was weird that she picked me out of about 3 people who were saying about the same thing to spew hateful, mean crap at all the while accusing me of being hateful and mean. Then telling me I shouldn't post like I did and say what I did because it's not right to tell people who and what to post. :cursing:

Anyway, I do understand that for some people hearing "0.25% chance of mortality" has no meaning. But neither does hearing "so-and-so knows someone who has a friend who died". Maybe it makes the risk of death seem real to them in a way that hearing a stat doesn't, but it still doesn't tell you want your risks are and how likely it is that you will die.

The way I see it...there's a chance I will die with surgery yes...but I have more of a chance to die from my weight if I DON'T have this surgery. It's a risk I am willing to take and a lot of others are too.

My depression from being fat and the cycle that I was in (gain weight, get depressed, eat to numb depression, gain more weight), was going to kill me faster than lapband surgery might kill me.

Yes, I was scared to death the night before my surgery, and the morning of my surgery. I had the surgery anyway. This is why I went ahead with it. I am 60 years old and now have blood pressure of 114/70, my bad knees are now climbing stairs and supporting my weight without pain, I have alot less back pain, my doctor has taken me off my diabetes medication because my A1C number is amazing, and I am so happy with my life, leaving my depression behind. Sometimes when we weigh the risks of something against the benefits, we make the best choice for ourselves. This was a personal choice and I am not trying to persuade anyone to get the surgery unless you have weighed all the factors with your doctor, I am giving you the facts of my case. Research, research, research, rely on medical advice only and make your decision.

:cry This is a hard Question but in my making my decision I need to know...anyone heard of deaths...and if so what happen

I personally know of a 33 year old healthy female 70 lbs overweight who went to that very popular lap band place with all the billboards. Ana had her surgury on february 4, 2010. She went to her post op appointment two days later and had lost 6 pounds but she had sympoms of phunmonia so she was given antibiotics. It took three days for her to have trouble breathing and was rushed to the hospital. She was diagnosed with a blood infection from the surgury. She was still talking and texting her friends on Wednesday about her status. That night she had 8 cardiac arrests and had multi organ failure. Ana passed away on Valentines day. Everyone is still trying to understand what went wrong.

I just came across this discussion and decided to join to reply. I myself have been looking into LAP-BAND® for quite a while now, but am disabled and my insurance won't cover it. I've heard nothing but good things about the LAP-BAND® oposed to gastric bypass. That is up until this last week. My cousin called me to say I seriously hope you aren't still considering it. She works with a girl that had it, she's lost a lot of weight, but was in ICU several days last week due to bleeding internally due to the LAP-BAND®. She also told me about someone that came in her clinic that had just lost a friend due from the LAP-BAND® lacerating something I believe she said. My aunt is currently in the hospital and her roommate also had the LAP-BAND®. She lost 135lbs, but developed a hernia and her intestines were all twisted due to complications of the band. She is so weak and sick and can't hold any food down. It definitely make you think...

You have to really take the "friend of a friend who works with someone who..." stories with a grain of salt.

Hernias are a common result of OBESITY, not the band. (In fact, they are often corrected during banding surgery.) Intestinal strangulation related to herniation is not a banding issue; it's an obesity issue. Banding actually reduces the risk of recurrence by addressing the obesity.

Unless I hear it from the medical examiner or read it in a peer-reviewed journal, I'm just not buying the horror stories people love telling those who are considering this pretty benign procedure.

For most, the potential benefits FAR outweigh the risks.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
