Hey Everyone,

I was recently banded on 8/22/08 and have 1 zillion and 1 questions! I would love to know how much restriction you should feel being 10 days post-op? In the hospital after the surgery I was completely closed and did not pass the barium swallow test, the feeling of the Fluid in my chest really had me freaking out, and the surgeon had to rush to the hosp to take out the 1cc of fluid he put in it already. I am on the stage 2- cream Soups, puddings, yogurt, & Protein Shakes but if I try to sneak the littlest bit of anything solid - even applesauce - I get that awful feeling and sometimes start PBing. It is really scary and at this rate I think I'll be on Protein shakes the rest of my life. How does everyone else feel restriction wise? Also I am dying for the pureed stage... and i never thought I be saying that! Thanks for the help guys!

Hello,

I know as far as restriction is concerned everyone is different. I was banded on August 21st, my MD does not perform the first fill till 6 weeks post op. I know the first 2 days I had a hard time swallowing Water, and I could feel it going down, but I have realized that is because I was very swollen, day 3-4 got much better. I now am almost 2 weeks post op and I have no problems, no pbing nothing. I am on full liquids but have taking a few bites of real food like mashed potatoes, mac and cheese and ground hamburger and it has been fine. I wasn't because I was hungry I just wanted to taste it I guess, I guess I could have spit it out LOL. But I was curious to what it would feel like. It felt like nothing. LOL. Maybe your MD needs to unfill you, and let the band and your new stomach heal. That would be my guess from my personal experiences and what I have read on these posts. Good luck to you

I was banded 8/29 and have had no problems whatsoever. However I am not going to bypass my surgeon's directions (been there done that preop it's how I woke up in recovery w/out the band) I want my band to heal properly! SO I'm starving but hanging in there. I can do anything for a little while (that attitude is getting me through nursing school LOL) So sorry you've had a fright already!

I'm with vsnowrn and RestlessMonkey. I was banded on 8/26/08 6 days ago and i have no restriction what so ever.I actually feel like i dont even have a band even though i know i do. I mean, I was on a liquid diet 30 days before surgery and now 7 days after surgery (which means 1 more day till pureed... YAY!) but currantly i can drink a Tomato Soup at hand and when im donei can feel a lil full effect but i think thats only cuz i might be a tiny tiny bit swollen or maybe its just in my head. So i really dont have restriction now and i was worried about that but your the total oposite of me. WOW its so wierd how people react differently. But ifit bothers you that much then you should really have a good talk with your doctor. Keep your head up though, we ALL face challenges there just all different ones.

I was banded the 22nd. I feel no restriction. After I drink my Protein Shake I'm not hungry but shortly after my stomach starts growling. I go back tomorrow to have the staples removed and hope go on puree foods

PB is "productive burp". It is like vomiting, but not as gross, because there isn't an stomach acid. food comes up like it went down, but maybe with more saliva (slime). I don't have staples. They used the adhesive on me. Makes a pretty scar :tt2:

Some people don't feel any restriction at all until they have 1 or more fills. You sound like one of the lucky ones who have restriction simply from having the band put on. This is probably due to swelling. I was like that also. This is why you will probably lose weight prior to your fill, even though it is normal for some to gain weight during this time.

If your body doesn't want you to sneak these solids, please stop. If you are pbing you are probably delaying the healing. I think this irritates the pouch. Try to stick to your full liquids. If I am correct, this is probably keeping you full since you feel restriction. Spice the soups with extra garlic powder, sage, and pepper. I KNOW it isn't the same as real food, I have been there too. But, you aren't ready for the other stuff and your body is telling you that.

I read earlier that someone else had issues with applesauce. Next time, maybe try sf pudding. Take small bites and eat it slowly. It used to take me 10 min. just to eat one of the little pudding cups. It gets better and you will probably continue to lose a few more weeks.

Thanks everyone for all the help! I am now 2 weeks post op and feel great- I moved onto stage 3 (pureed) today and so far so good! I am going to try tuna in the blender tonight! Sounds great doesn't it? I still have good restriction but I can get stuff down now. The swelling must have gotten alot better. Going for my first fill 9/18- can't wait - but nervous. Also how long should I wait before exercising (something besides walking)?

I thought I heard 7 weeks - I don't want to call the Dr just to ask that. Thanks for all the help- you all are wonderful!!!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
