Sept. Samurai Surgery Check-in

Recommended Posts

Hanging in here. I am down to @ 208lbs from 272lbs on my first appointment with the surgeon.

I have not lost anything really for @ the last 3 months so it's been hard.

My surgeons PA was tough on me this last visit. He said I need to take a closer look at my intake.

I know he's right but it seems so hard right now.

UGH!

I am a bit discouraged.

I am ten feet under with everything in my lfe right now.

My year has royally sucked. I'm on the verge of firing my surgeon's too. I still am not at my "sweet spot" can't seem to find it. Either I'm always getting stuck, or it goes right thru. So ok, I'm a failure at yet another thing. I went into surgery at 242. Today i sit here at 232. Wooo hooo 10 pounds lost. In a year? I could have done that before. I'm at the point I'm thinking about looking into revision surgery. My surgeon's started doing it, but the PA and I are not seeing eye to eye.

Teri

Teri, I'm sorry your having such a hard time. I feel lately "why did I have surgery"? It's still so hard! I know I am better then I was though & I hope it will come. Good luck!

It's been SOOOO long since I have logged into this site!! But wanted to give an update on my progress and see how everyone else has been doing.

My surgery was September 15th. I have lost 63 pounds since my surgery date. I am weighing in at 178 pounds. I still have at least 28 more pounds to go to my 150 pound goal. Would love to see 140 pounds again...but I would be more than happy to just be 150 pounds. I'm able to get in clothes that I have hanged on to for years...it's a great feeling!! I'm trying to work out more because I want to tone up too while I'm losing weight.

My last fill was in May 2009. I think I'm due another one because I feel like I can eat a bit too much and I'm not losing anymore really.

Is anyone thinking about a Tummy Tuck or breast lift/reduction? I am. I was 42E cup and now I'm like a 38 DD...I've had 3 c-sections so losing my stomach is harder so a tummy tuck would be needed...but I'm still debating on that.

Anyway...everyone keep up the GREAT work!!

Today is my day, My one year anniversary. I can't believe how fast the year has gone. I weighed myself this morning and am 68 pounds down. I would love to lose 40 more but would be happy with 30.

Teri, I understand the Dr sucking, for me it was after the surgery they treat you different. And after this last farce, he was there and just stared at me. Why would I just show up, and on my 1 year anniv yet? Good Greif give me a break, he keeps you waiting hours, you think I am going to take off work for nothing! Enough of that, it just pisses me off again. :)

So what is the revision? Are you going to have it removed? Let me know, I think of you a lot and do hope that things start working your way.

Take care

I'm giving the thought of switching from lapband to RNY some serious thought... in fact so much so I've contacted my surgeon to go over my options.

Teri - I'm sorry the lapband hasn't worked for you. We all went into it with such high hopes. RNY would not be my choice but if it works better for you I say go for it!!! You need to be healthy for those 3 wonderful boys of yours. Good Luck!

My insurance will only cover the band or the RNY. So if the band isn't working for or with me, then the RNY is my only other choice.

That said.... I've not totally given up. I still have my Fluid in the band. Any more I'm stuck all the time, any less and I'm hungry at 10 minutes later. It's like it flushes right thru. I'm tired of the fills. I'm tired of not being able to be satisfied with meals. I eat little, but still am not loosing, and it's not because I skip on exercise, because I do quite a bit of it. Then the added news is (and the straw that is breaking my back) my diabetes is back. I'm back on metformin.

On a good note, I did a 2 mile stroll (2.2 miles to be exact) on Sunday and did it without getting hurt, and without stopping to rest. I did it with the boys, plus a cousin of theirs. IT was fun.

Teri,

I know you have had more than your share of problems. At times it has seemed so unfair that you were given even more challanges in your life. But you are a fighter and I know that everything is going to work out for you. I pray that you and your surgeon make the choice that is right for you. Whatever that is, please remember, you will always be a September Samurai. We all love and care for you. You may have an RNY, but we all share the same lives and experiences. We all understand and support you 150%.

Hey - maybe they can use your existing band scars or even make a happy face design for you  :cursing: :wink2:

Take Care and let us know how things go.

It's not for sure, as I have heard I'm stuck with this for two years. So I may be a bandster for another year. Not 100% sure I'm doing this. Just exploring options. I hate that my diabetes is coming back. I've gained a few pounds back, but less than 10, and they say that's not an excuse for that. They said i'd have to have gained like 40. So that's not right. So maybe my body is just worsening. Right now I have a long list of appts, starting with my surgeon on the 19th, and ending with my nut on the 26th. (Ironically the day Matthew has surgery himself) So time will tell. I'm frustrated, not eating much, and yet gaining. I just don't understand it. Seriously on fit day yesterday it said I have eaten 800 calories (which felt like a lot), and I'm up another 2 pounds.

Add to that that I'm now on a medication to induce menopause. I'm a wreck. If this works for a short time, I'll be having my ovaries removed.

Hi Terri,

So, your still hungry a lot? Is that the main thing? Are you eating your Protein? I did not lose from March-sept 5-6!! I was not eating a lot but I was eating the wrong foods. I'm not saying this is you. Have you talked w/ your nutritionist? What does your Doc think the problem is? I feel for you. Sometimes I feel why did I get the surgery because it is still SUCH a BATTLE. I know I am better off than I was though. Keep us posted.

Hi all, I haven't posted to this thread in a looonnggg time-too long. I have lost 50lbs this year and I hope to lose 50 more. I know that's slow for some but I am ok with it, at least I was. Now I'm ready to start losing some serious weight. At least 15 lbs by the holidays. I know I can do it. I haven't had a fill for almost 6 mos. I think that will be my first step.

It's confirmed I'm a banster for another 8 months. Then if things are still going poorly we will start the process over. At least I won't have to loose the weight again, to show commitment. That's good, because I'm busy gaining right now :scared2: I hate this. Why am I gaining. I'm more active, and eating right according tot he nut. She's at a loss. I've even cut Out carbs (bad ones anyway).

Halloween has been hard on me. Kids keep trying to shove candy in my face. Thanksgiving is next... but I'm ok with that one. I eat my turkey, a tbsp of stuffing, and potatoes and fill up the rest on cauliflower. Not bad in my book. Then for "desert" I will have some sugar free, fat free milk made pudding pie. IF I have any.

I'm back to walking. In fact Last month I did a 2.2 mile pit run/walk in walk mode with 4 kids (my three and a brothers one).

Been a hard week here, Matthew had surgery, Brandon and myself have been sick.

april: Sounds like you're doing great, and with another fill, I bet you'll make your goal of 15 lbs by the holidays.

teri: You're really hanging in there giving it your all, so there'll be no looking back wondering what you could have done to to make the band work for you. It might turn out this just wasn't the right surgery for you, sadly enough. Sometimes there's just no way of knowing these things ahead of time. I'm so sorry that you've had so many troubles.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
