Once banded, what happens if you get sick and need to throw up from your lower stomach? How can it get up through your upper stomach past the band and out of your mouth? Curious???

I asked my doctor the same question. She said it is a risk, but they have only had one person who's band slipped. It will come up, it just can irritate the band. I think in the beginning, when you are healing, it is most crucial to keep from throwin up. I was worried, too. I actually have thrown up, and I am okay. It does come up!

I have gotten sick since I've had the surgery and its not that bad. Honestly I'd rather puke than spit up from the band. You just want to be careful because it could cause slipage.

Well, I just know that when I throw up it's not a pretty picture. It's so hard that I get burst vessles in my eyes. I hope this is not a problem. I guess I will have to watch what and where I eat so that doesn't occur. Thanks for the info.

oh well that is your reflexes. That won't effect the band. I mean it will probably be the same except your stomach might get more soar now. I mean I know you don't know when you get sick, but try to make sure you are eating like mushy food when that happens. That way you don't have so much pain.

Yeah. I throw up from my toes and all! Lol! That poses more of a risk than burping up from the band. The heaving is what can cause slippage. Be sure your doctor prescribes you some medication for nausea. That saved me a few times!

My surgeon said that what's in the lower stomach is fine enough to pass back up through the band and generally there is not much sitting below the band at any time.

I had quite violent vomiting in the 24 hours immediately post surgery and I was petrified my stitches or band would slip etc but all was fine.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
