Presurgery...feeling sooo self conscious

Recommended Posts

My surgery is set for Sept. 24...yay! We are going to Vegas for 10 days starting Thursday. Since I've spent about the last 2 months talking about and preparing for this surgery..I'm feeling so self conscious of myself. It's almost like I'm 16 again, and I think everyone in Vegas will be snickering at "the fat chick who goes on vacation". How stupid is that? Like anyone is paying attention to me..or like I would ever think such a thing about anyone else. I keep thinking thoughts like, "people at the pool will look at me"..."I don't want to go to a nightclub...I'll look fat"....ugh.

I just wish I could relax. We have gone to Vegas the last three years and I've weighed exactly the same and I didn't think like this then...it's just cause I'm so focused on my weight right now....I'm hyper sensitive about everyghing....

I just wanted to know if I'm a big freak..or if this is kinda normal??

Hey Chickie!

Don't even worry about it. The only reason that you are focusing on this is because your battle with weight is now at the forefront of your mind. I know ,it's easier said than done. I was just banded in July and haven't lost much weight yet (i've only had one fill and have zero restriction)... I went out with 2 of my skinny friends on Saturday and felt like a total cow... It never happened before, but now things like that seem to bother me, so what you're feeling is totally normal. Just hang in there and before we BOTH know it, we'll be the skinny girls!!!

Oh yeah, I know exactly how you feel! I went on a cruise 4 months ago and I felt the same way. I had been banded though, but only for a couple of months, so I hadn't lost that much weight at the time. I was so uncomfortable.. every seat I sat in.. it was just awful. What's even worse is when I look at those cruise photo's now I look so HUGE with this wide face and my hair was just hideous looking. ICK. I avoided those photographers who ask to take your photo's (thank goodness) and I told my husband that next year when we go on another cruise that I want to take as many of those photo's as I can.. lol.

What you are feeling right now is totally normal, but in the scheme of things, you really dont have that much to lose, compared to say ME, who was almost 300 lbs and just think, in 6 months you could possibly even be AT goal. I know some folks in my group have already lost like 70-80lbs.. its rare, but it does happen.. but for sure in a year you'll most likely be at goal. then your next vegas trip will be even better!

Thank you everyone for your kind words! So nice to hear, and my avatar pic is terrible~hehehe~it's one of those "take it with my computer while I sit here pics"!! :w00t:

You are right, I told my dh that next year, I was going to wear "slutty clothes" to Vegas. I'm going to try and stay focused on that and have a good time and start my new life shortly after we return.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
