Fill before or after vacation?

Recommended Posts

Scheduled my first fill for 9/11. Vacation is on 9/27. Maybe I should reschedule for when we get back the next week. What do you think? Thanks, my little lapband family! :cursing: I love you all.

If you knew how many cc's he planned to give you, that would help answer the question. If it was just 1cc, I'd say go ahead and do it. Anymore than that, wait until after your vacation since you won't know how your body is going to react.

Just my opinion!

From reading on here I've seen quite a range of what different doctors have given on the first fill.

I don't think too many people notice a huge difference after the first fill. My first fill was 1cc in a 4 cc band and I already had some restriction just from the band. I was able to eat without a problem. Unless you are going on a vacation thats all inclusive and the food is really important I would go ahead and get the fill just to keep yourself on track. Best wishes and enjoy the vacation.

I would do it before because you have 17 days to feel it out. You also don't get much impact from your first fill, so it will be helpful to get it started. Also, why delay additional weight loss you could be experiencing by several weeks???

After the first fill, most people are able to eat reasonable quantities without a lot of difficulty. I think you should go for it.

Kathryn, how have you been doing post op? If you are doing well, I agree get the fill. You have time to see how you're going to react!

Enjoy your vacation!

Of course I haven't had a fill yet; LOL Just trying to think what it would like to be banded, ready for fill (our doc does 1st at 6 weeks) and then going on vacation 2 weeks after! :cursing:

I would get the fill before you go on vacation so you don't overeat on your vacation. I just had my first fill (2cc's) a couple of days ago and I am doing fine. Not hungry at all. My doc says if you have a problem with the fill, you will know immediately after. My vote: Get the fill.

To loose weight is what you ultimately want more than anything...right??? Even more than a vacation... I agree, you still will have time so get the fill ...go on vacation...maybe even loose a lil ....when you get home you will feel good that you did, and be ready for another fill (if need be) shortly there after!!!! Take care have fun n enjoy! :wink2: :cursing: Debbie

I would wait until I got home from vacation. I had a fill before my vacation and everytime we went out to eat I could not. People with us would say are you ok? I did not want everyone to know my business. I still think my band is to tight but I am losing really well so I just live with it. Have a great vacation.:wink2:

I got a fill after my vacation. When I'm spending that much money, I want to enjoy it, and not risk any problems. I would HATE to be in a strange place, have a problem, and not have my doctor around. Or horror, there NOT BE a bariatric doctor around!!! Plus, I knew from flying prior to that, that flying makes my band tighten anyway, and I didn't want to risk being to tight and then being miserable and ruining it for my husband. Plus, I ALWAYS lose weight on vacation. I have a desk job, so being on vacation and swimming, snorkeling, hiking, walking, dancing, and riding bikes causes me to actually lose weight anyway. I'm very active on my vacations.

I got my first fill 8/19 (3ccs in 8 cc band) and am experiencing no restriction so I have my 2nd fill scheduled of 9/2. I understand your concern because I was concerned, too. Everyone is different though so you have to make your own decision. Like HeatherO said though, you have a couple of weeks to find out how you will react before the vacation so knowing what I know now, I'd get the fill.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
