A hysto is not the answer either. Back then HRT was not the thing to do especially if you have maternal history of breast cancer & I did. I went through all the things that women in their 40-50's go through. It was no picnic especially with young children and I had already lost my mom so I really didn't know what was happening to me. Duh!! I continued to gain weight all those years anyway. Hang in there they get better treatments all the time.

Although it could be, I doubt it. Most people that I have talked to that have it, have problems with their TOM either not happening or being extremely heavy. Another big thing with PCOS is insulin resistance (I take metformin for it). Also, there is typically pain around the ovaries, especially during sexual contact. Also, my GYN sent me for an untrasound. They could visably see the cysts. If all you have is extra hair, you may just have a hormone level issue. Of course, I am sure that there is more that they look for. I hope you don't have it either. Good luck.

Blood tests alone are not typically enough to diagnose PCOS.

For instance , if your hormone levels are elevated BUT you do not have missed periods, excess hair growth , weight around the middle or any other symptoms of PCOS you wont be , or shouldn't be diagnosed w/ PCOS.

PCOS Of Symptomatic , if you have the symptoms (more than one ) you have PCOS. BUT the MAIN symptom if missed periods.

There is NO ONE Blood test to test for PCOS.

Did the metformin help at all with weight loss? I got my band in May and have only lost 15 pounds - much of which was in the first 4 weeks. I was just diagnosed with PCOS last week and my doc/gyn thought I should just use yaz for the symptoms but I had seen where some docs use yaz and metformin. Doc was concerned with the GI symptoms. Think the symptoms would be worth it if I could lose more weight. I have only lost 2 pounds in the last 2 months. Any thoughts?

I was diagnosed 19 years ago with PCOS. I don't remember having a blood test, but I do remember having to take a diabetes test (the drink was disgusting!).

I was told then, there are 3 main things a doctor will look at, excess body hair, especially face; excess weight; missed or stopped periods. I had all 3 (still do). I was also told by the doctor that a woman with PCOS doesn't have to have ANY of the symptoms and she can still have it.

The jury is still out on the cause of PCOS. The link between PCOS and weight is well known. Have one, you have the other. Change one and you change the other. They still aren't certain which causes which though.

And once you lose the weight, the PCOS goes into remission. Essentially, its like not having it, but its still there. Put that weight back on and bang! Up it comes again.

So, flirtylass, I won't say you don't have it because you don't have all the symptoms. You can have an hormonal imbalance without having PCOS, so that could be the answer. Best to wait til the results come back.

Its a syndrome meaning a group of signs/symptoms. You don't have to have all to qualify, but usually there's a certain number of them you have to have in order to be diagnosed.

I've had doctors ask me if I'm sure I have PCOS because I don't have cysts on my ovaries - never had!! You can be thin with it and I've even been told you can have no symptoms at all and still have it.

I was diagnosed with PCOS about 12 years ago. I only had periods once or twice a year. I struggled with weight gain, infertility, amenorrhea, facial hair, and fatigue. My band has saved my life....

I am almost 1 year out and have lost 86 pounds. I have to agree with the carb thing. My weight loss for the past 3 months has been pretty much nonexistant. I low carbed during the first 6 months post band and then decided to start taking in carbs again. Bam...weight loss stopped. I am low carbing again and beginning to see the scales move. I really do think that there is something to carbs and PCOS not mixing well.

Anyway, I am 11 months out I have normal periods, lots of energy, 86 pounds gone, my sex drive does exist now. I still have problems with excess hair, but I dobt that will ever go away completely on its own. I have begun laser hair removal. And believ it or not I am getting my tubes tied this month. That is just wild when I have struggled with infertility for so long, but it would appear that I have become fertile again, but we have 1 bio son and adopted 1, so we are not planning to have anymore.

I say all that to say this, YOU CAN DO THIS!!! Yes PCOS sucks, and makes it harder, but not impossible. Cut out carbs, exercise and log what you eat!!

You do not have cysts all the time. I have had sonograms and had no cysts and I have had them and had as many as 110 cysts in each ovary , If you have a sono and have none go back a different time of the month and you will have them .

Chances are they just never caught the cysts when you went in for a sono. Th eproblem is since people w/ PCOS do not know typically when the ovulate you cant go in of or a sono to check for cysts at the right times.

You wouldnt have a hysterectomy for PCOS. They used to do a thing called a wedge resection

Ovarian wedge resection - Fertility Journey

but it is really not common any more. Removing your uterus wouldn't do anything at all - perhaps you had endometriosis - which is probably the most common reason for hysterectomy.

I was Dx with PCOS in my late teens - I hadn't had periods for five years and had PACKED on the beef big time.:frown: My skin was bad, but that's all I had, no hirsuitism (extra hair) thank god as would have spent a fortune on lazer removal!!

For me, Metformin didn't do anything. It made my skin 10000 times worse - as I had come off the OCP and my skin just broke out with Metformin. I had to stop taking it, but it didn't make me lose anyweight either - so big deal. Because I couldn't tolerate the metformin, but I couldnt go back on the pill due to my weight and family history - they had to do something about the fact that I wasn't having periods - as it apparently increases your endometrial cancer risk - so they gave me a Mirena:scared2: - best thing ever! I am not trying to get pregnant at the moment, so I don't mind - and it means I get to still not have periods which I personally think is awesome! ha ha.

The single biggest thing with PCOS is exercise exercise exercise - as exercising makes your body less insulin resistant, and therefore you process you food more like a non PCOS person! :crying:

My biggest thing with PCOS and the thing i have always hated is the excess facial hair. As soon as i can afford it again im getting laser hair removal. I am having regular periods now , which is odd because before when i was thin i did not have them regularly And by regular i mean I get them once a month they come at different times LOL

If i could figure out a way to stop or slow down this Hair growth i would be a happy camper now !!!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
