When will my hair stop falling out?

Recommended Posts

My surgery was last December 2007 and I have lost 50 lbs. since then. 50 lbs. more to go. I'm averaging about 7-8 lbs loss per month. My hair has been falling out for the last 4 months and I'm getting worried now. I know it is normal to have some Hair loss but was wondering when it stops. I have been eating plenty of Protein and veggies, taking my Vitamins and eating very healthy.

Do a thread research on Biotin pills here. These could really help your situation if your not taking them already.

I feel your pain. I was banded in Nov and have lost 45 pounds. I dropped hair like crazy this spring. I don't seem to be losing so much now - but I don't have much left to lose. I'm pretty sparse on top.

Biotin works well. I lost a lot of hair when I lost a bunch of weight on Weight Watchers a few years ago. Somebody told me about Biotin. It does work but slowly. You can get it pretty cheap at Walmart in the Vitamin section in different strengths. The last time I bought was capsules of 5000 mcg. Your hair should grow back when your weight levels off.

My hair was thinning out on top from taking synthroid for the last couple of years and now with the weight loss it seems so much worse to me.

Someone tod me to try Nioxin Shampoo. They come in different "systems".

I bought System#4 for hair that is noticeably thinning. I use the cleanser and scalp therapy and see a huge difference.

It's expensive but it's worth it. You can try trial sizes just to see if it works for you. If you can't find it they sell it on e-bay.

Good luck to all of us...........we can all be success stories!!

It will stop, Lis, eventually. I had that problem for a while when I hit around the 4 month mark, and even bought a wig for days when I felt particularly sparse. I would take the advice others have given about Vitamins. There are hair and nail supplements easily gotten at GNC or Vitamin Shoppe. A doctor at one of my support groups also recommended chelated zinc.

It's difficult, but be patient. Your body is just adjusting to a major change.

Mine is still falling out like crazy. I have been told that it will stop when my weight is more stable.

I too am having this issue. I have lost 50lbs. and it started about two weeks ago. I appreciate the recommendations on Shampoo and supplements. I will order today and give it all a try. I try hard to eat alot of protien, vegies and fruit and even take a Vitamin for post-bariatric surgery, but still have this problem. I still have alot to lose, I just hope I have hair when I get there!!

My sympathies. I have the exact same problem. Been going about 3 months. I have severe polycystic ovarian syndrome so I was losing hair even beofre the surgery, but now it's on overdrive.

I've been wearing a wig recently, but I've just taken the step of cutting it all RIDICULOUSLY SHORT (about 1.5cm / half an inch long) and it actually looks fuller and thicker! The bald Patches just seem to be blending in!

Anyway, I'm just starting Biotin, and I use nioxin which is great. You just need to find the solution you're comfortable with -- whether it is wearing a wig, cutting it super short, or just embracing that this is a temporary problem on the way to a permanent weight solution.

It's hard to swallow if your hair is your pride and joy, believe me I know. But you just need to try some different things and see what makes you feel better.

Good luck :smile2:

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
