it was so good to see you on the other thread! I tried to reply to your post, but I kept having trouble! I wonder if it was because it was too big!

Hi Dee, I am traveling from Florida to have Dr. Kirshenbaum perform my lapband surgery on July 31st. Glad to hear that you liked him. I haven't met him yet, but have a phone appoinment for consult on this coming Wednesday. What else can you tell me about him and his office and about Parker Hospital. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I am very excited about surgery, but don't know too much about Dr. Kirshenbaum. Look forward to hearing from you.

Sandy

Hi,

I'm traveling from Iowa to Colorado for surgery in Oct. I am so excited, but nervous too. I'd love to hear more about Dr. K as well.

I am so grateful for this site. I kept joking to my husband that I was going to get a lapband because I'd had it with this post-baby weight that I can't seem to shed - after 2 years.

We knew it wasn't possible because of the cost.

Then I discovered the $9950 cost via Dr. K. - and his consults over the phone to keep travel to a minimum.

Where's the catch? This seems too good to be true!!

More details please! I am so excited - just so, so nervous!!

Thanks everyone for the info and inspiration!!

Hi Sandy!

You're going to love Dr. K! That's what we all call him. His office is very busy, but his staff is wonderful! Dr. K truly cares about each of his patients. His office is in Aurora in the medical professional building attached to The Medical Center of Aurora. I work at the Parker Adventist Hospital that is attached the Surgicenter he uses. They are really nice there too! Let me know if you have any further questions. The Surgicenter is brand new and in a beautiful new building.

Congrats on taking the first steps toward your new life!

Yes! I agree! It seems too good to be true, BUT it is true! Dr. K and his staff work hard and go out of their way to make our surgeries possible. I believe that he really cares about people who suffer with obesity. No catch! Honest! Believe me, I am proof! My BMI was over 60 when I got banded -- I am healthier and happier! I have had great things happen since being banded. Previously, I was pre-diabetic and I do not have any problems with my sugars anymore! I am so pleased!

Come back and ask anything! All of Dr. K's banders are the best! He only bands the BEST!

Welcome Lotza!

Congrats on your upcoming banding! Do you live in the Denver area? We meet once at month at Red Robins for a little very personal support group. It's just some of Dr. K's local bandsters who have met via this site.

If you're ever in the area and we're meeting! Come on over!

dee~

p.s. I started this thread only because of the problems I was having getting on the other one. Post at either one! I'm hoping this thread helps others who are thinking about Dr. K as their surgeon!

Tied~

Unfortunately I live in Utah, so I probably won't make any of your support groups  But maybe there is one around the time I'll get my first fill. We'll see how it all goes. Thanks for the welcome!!

Hi there, I felt the same way as you when I found Dr. K. I was all set to go to Mexico because here in Florida the cost is $15,800 and that was pretty steep for me so I had to look for an alternative. Dr. K's office staff has been so very nice and I have had my consult with the nutritionist already. She is also very nice so I am very nervous and excited at the same time. Let's keep in touch and share stories.

I live in Florida and traveled to Colorado to have Dr. Kirshenbaum perform my banding. I did so because he has done thousands of laprascopic procedures, not just banding, and had a great price.

Living in the tropical climate of Florida I also found going to the mountains for followups an appealing idea.

Check my progress photos out on my signature line.

You have done marvelous on your journey. Congratulations!!! I don't mind traveling from Florida to Colorado because the price was right and I have Family in Colorado and now to hear that Dr. K is so good is icing on the cake.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
