To unfill or not to unfill...WWYD?

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I'm 11 months out and have lost 115lbs. I LOVE my band! I got filled two months or so ago and I have been super tight ever since...Initiallly, I was getting tuck and pbing, but now I am not...

I am not, however, able to eat many many things...here's my food intake

breakfast:

if I can get something down, I have a drink

Lunch: if I can get something down, I'll eat a yogurt or a cheesestick

Dinner: last night I went out with dh and got a clam chowder and a caesar salad...I ate the broth out of the Soup and 5 bites of salad( like 2 piece of lettuce and a crouton)...oh, and one of dh's scallops.

I'm not losing a ton because by the time the end of the night rolls around, I eat ice cream because I want to physically eat...

I'm frustrated. I know I am not making great food choices, and I am not sure if having an unfill would help me or not....but...i'm frustrated w/ inability to eat.

I would go get a unfill darlin. You are still tight if you can't eat properly. You should know better then I that if you can only get liquids down and minute amounts of food you are just to tight. You have to be able to eat, not drink your foods.

I agree, a slight unfill maight be in order. You have done SO well & come so far! Rememeber, you have to take in calories to keep your body ready to burn fat during exercise! I had a second fill after 4 months & down 61 pounds, it was TOO tight, whatever I did manage to get down always came back up or I just wretched from all the slime! Inevidably, my band slipped from all the wretching & I had all but 1cc taken out & now I am starting all over! I had put back on about 10 pound & have had a VERY small refill, but now my body is needing to readjust all over again.

Again, you have done great & look fantastic! Good Luck!

I went through something similar with my last fill and broke down and went in for a partial unfill and it was the best thing to do IMO. I was eating so little, it actually was kind of stalling my weight loss. I was also totally miserable, never knowing if I'd be able to get anything down or keep it down if I did. Eating became something I was almost afraid of doing, which isn't healthy. It couldn't hurt to get a bit taken out and see if you feel better.

Good luck.

Mnilene, Did you have to have another surgery because of the band slip, or did the unfill hopefully fix the problem?

Rain, it sounds like you may be a bit too tight. You may have some difficulty losing if you get a slight unfill. I would start with .2 or .3. I have the same difficulty when I'm too tight but if I get a slight unfill I have the same 3-5 lbs that come on and off when I go back up. It could be that this is the time to decide what goal weight you want and try to eat mushies more when tight or just stay at the weight you are. Sounds like you have a fickle band like me. Good luck.

Yes, I would get an unfill. I went through the same thing for months and ended up eating slider foods and always felt hungry. It was very frustrating. It can cause you to get used to eating junk food, which is not good if you are trying to lead a healthy lifestyle. Believe me, you'll be happy you did. I was.

Hello all!!!

Got .8 taken out of the band...half of my last fill. I think it was a good idea as I was eating crap because I knew it would go down...not healthy!!!

I can't wait to try and eat a salad...

Good for you. I know the feeling. Eating slider foods all of the time is no way to live. It will mess with your head. Glad to hear you are doing better.

Absolutely unfill! If you can't eat 1000 or more calories of nutritious food per day then it isn't healthy. I actually just got a slight unfill because I was coughing/choking at night and I feel so much better. I didn't realize how hard I was fighting just to get my Water down...

I do have to use a little more will power to eat less at night when I'm losest - but if you're already eating ice cream it will be better for you!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
