I need opinions

I have been on this journey since March 5th. I finally have a surgery date of July 14th. Okay that is all well and good but now here is my question. I had a really horrible sinus infection the first two weeks in April and lost my ability to taste. I still have no sense of taste AT ALL! I have lost 35 lbs since this all started without dieting.......if you can't taste you start to lose all interest. Part of me wants to save myself all that money and not have the surgery. I fear though that my taste will come back at some point. I hate to anger my surgeon by postponing. Has anyone lost their sense of taste for over 2 months? I have lost it for about 5 days but never like this. If you were in my shoes and paying out of pocket for the entire surgery what would you do at this point? Hold off until July to make any decisions? Get it done in the hopes it will come back? Postpone and see how much comes off out of boredom that everything tastes like....nothing!? I keep thinking of how many times I wished and prayed to lose weight and get healthy.......oh be careful what you wish for. On the bright side I won't be able to taste Protein shakes.

Marion, are you still on antibitoics? Will a nose spray help? I would wait until early July to change your mind. How much more weight do you have to lose?

Oh Julie I have lots more to lose! About 125 lbs. I have not been on antibiotics since April 14th. Nose spray both over the counter and steroid type script kind have brought no relief. I have been back to my doctor and he can find no reason for the loss of taste. I am just thinking of that big chunk of cash going out possibly.....gotta not do that and just assume it will come back. I probably wouldn't worry about it but I actually know someone who lost his sense of taste and smell about 5 years ago.

Oh you had a thigh lift? I hear those are painful! well not that any surgery is a piece of cake but I hear arms and legs are the worst. I won't need legs but man will I need arms done! Unless I want to save money on air flights.

I know you said you were taking an antibiotic, just wondering if you started any new meds in the last couple of months? I had an issue with metformin... a med used for diabetes, as well as given to women, by some doctors, when they are trying to get pregnant.

I had a terrible sense of taste and smell (and we are talking simply horrible) for ab t 8 months. It has been over 5 years and still bugs me occasionally.

What you have is called "anosmia" (I'm pretty sure on the spelling). There are bulliten boards for this.

I would say (in my opinion) go ahead with the surgery...the taste will most likely come back.

No don't smoke never have. Unfortunately or oddly or coincidently I did spray weeds in my yard the day before the sinus infection. My fear is the combination has ruined my nose forever.

No I am not on any new medications. Thanks for the new word. I looked it up and found this......

Patients who actually have anosmia may complain wrongly of ageusia, although they retain the ability to distinguish salt, sweet, sour, and bitter—humans' only taste sensations.

I do have the ability to distinguish all of those! Hmmmm well it gives me a new thing to think about.

I would delay the surgery. If you're losing weight without really trying, I'd wait and see if your weight loss tapers off or you begin to gain again before scheduling the surgery. If your sense of smell comes back, then schedule it right away!

I've known a couple of people who have lost their sense of smell, and one told me that at first he gained weight because he was trying so hard to get food satisfaction. Then he lost it again. But he didn't wither away to nothing, either. It's possible that the enjoyment is now gone from eating for you, and therefore you're not eating for emotional/pleasurable reasons anymore. That might be enough.

I sincerely hope you get your sense of smell back. Like anything, you'll probably get used to it, but it seems like a bummer. I do think weed poison is bad news all around, and I never use it. I've also read that a lot of sinus "infections" are often caused by mold. Have you tried an anti-fungal spray? I don't know what's out there for that...

Good luck!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
