scared...bariatric team discussing me today

Recommended Posts

Today is the day, after months of appointments, I find out if the Bariatric team will approve me as a candidate. I'm trying to stay positive I really am. I still have to wait for a surgery date, then I have to see if my insurance will approve...but really all of that hinges on the decision made today. My biggest fear is that they will say "no". Then what?

Luu, just have faith that everything will turn out just fine. Let us know what you find out. Good luck to you!

I didn't have to do that. I just went to the doc.. he did his examination and got me approved that day with my insurance company. I am scheduled for June.

Why is a team having to discuss if they will do your procedure or not?

Just curious.

Thanks for the support!!!

Karen,

Every program is different...all things considered I am glad I had a few months to prepare, however, I think its a bit ridiculous at this point. Not all of us are as fortunate as you, count yourself lucky. Also there are insurance requirements that took some time to fulfill. I'm told that if you get to the pint of being discussed there is a good possibility its a go. Still I'm nervous.

Here is my time line:

02/04/2008-Attended Orientation/support group

02/22/2008-First appointment w/ Provider Bariatric program

(Weight loss goal of 12 pounds for insurance and

Bariatric surgery requirements)

02/22/2008-EKG

03/18/2008-1st appointment with the dietitian (gave me homework)

03/18/2008-Chest X-Ray

03/18/2008-Gall Bladder Ultra-Sound

03/?/2008-EGD Digestive Disease test

04/01/2008-Attended 2ND support group

04/08/2008-2nd appointment with the dietitian

(Went over post op diet and homework, weight was down 6 pounds!!!)

04/23/2008-Meet with Surgeon

04/23/2008-Psych evaluation

04/25/2008-Follow up appointment w/LNP (will decide if

I’m ready to be “presented” for lap band surgery-stripped

down to my undies and had to go to the bathroom but I

met my weight loss goal of 12 pounds!)

05/21/2008-Board of Psychologist, Surgeon, Dietitian, Primary

Providers meet to discuss eligibility patients.

05/?/2008-Paperwork submitted to insurance company for approval

(Assuming board approves me as a patient)

07/?/2008-Will have surgery if all goes as planned.

I've invested a lot of money and time into this...I can't even imagine at this point being turned down.

I am very excited for you! I will be honest. I worked an idea job... LOVED it but the insurance did not cover weight loss surgery... so I changed jobs. Took a cut in pay and went to work at a place where they pay 100% of weight loss surgery. I am sooooooo ready!! :-)

Hugs, Karen R.

I have a surgery date!!!!!!! June 24th!!! My insurance approval is "pending" lady I spoke to in charge of compiling my information for the insurance company said that once I get approved by the board its not likely my insurance will not approve me. Also when I have a surgery date the insurance company is quick to approve/disprove I was told my insurance is a good one. Don't want to jinx myself...at least I'll know soon!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well. I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening. So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this?? Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
