Major Diarrhea 4 days post-op

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I was banded on Friday, May 16th and everything went great. However, I have had diarrhea very bad since my operation. It is not getting any better. It seems like I go to the bathroom and then I have to go again a few minutes later. Is this normal? I do not have any nausea or fever so I'm not too terribly alarmed. But I am having some cramping. I took an imodium earlier and that did not help and am taking another one now. I just wanted to see if anyone else had experienced this, and if so, when and how it stopped. Thanks in advance!

Hiya, Yes I had the same thing. It actually started the very next morning after my surgery. I can't remember how long it lasted but it was a least a week if not two.

I'm so glad you posted about this. I was banded on the 16th as well and I've been going since the day after surgery non stop. I'm not having any cramping but i am having pressure...I know that doesn't explain a lot!

You are not alone in this. I was banded April 4th and everything went very smoothly. At first I had a little diarreah with cramping, but not too bad, and then on the 5th day, it really hit me big time. I missed an extra week of work because of it. My Dr. and nutritionist both mentioned that the surgery often affects some people in this way. It can also make you lactose intolerant and sensitive to the fake sugars for a little while. I took immodium several times before it finally slowed down. By then I was able to eat some blended foods-Soup. It finally went away. I was able to go back to the fake sugars, but i am still lactose intolerant (and have been forever). Which meant I couldn't take any of those Protein drinks with whey. Be sure to keep the lines of communication open with your Dr. and with your nutritionist. Also keep drinking your liquids and electrolytes.

Hope you get to feeling better real soon.

HI. I had the same thing. My Dr. said it was normal and told me "let it all come out" and told me don't take anything to stop it unless it lasts for over a week. Once you are allowed to change your diet it will be better. Congrats on your weight loss.:wink2:

7_5_142.gif Ahhhh yes the fun of constantly running to the restroom. I was banded last week on May 13th. First 2 days Constipation which is very rarely a problem with me, then ever since then it's like "run Forrest run" My Dr. told me it is very common and may last a little over a week and not to take anything for it. I see him tomorrow and am a little nervous because he is at his other office so I have to drive 1 1/2 hrs to see him. With the way it is going I figure that I will have to stop at least once if not twice to use the restroom. I don't like public restrooms all that well. Sorry off the subject.... But yes it is perfectly normal to have it. good luck with your journey.

I too was banded by Dr. Zapata - isn't he wonderful. A few days after I got back I had terrible diarrhea also. We called him, he called back within 5 minutes and told us to eat yogurt with active cultures. He said that he thought it was the antibiotic that we were given - it destroyed the balance of bacteria in the stomach. It helped.

I'm having the same issue. Was banded on the 27th. Won't go into the details, but it's nice to know others have experienced the same.

My partner was also intolerant of the Protein drinks with whey. They gave her Migraines. She's done quite well on the Spirutein soy-based shakes. She experimented with various brands prior to going on the liquid pre-op diet. They're not too bad, actually. She mixes them with Plain Silk soymilk, and since they were a bit heavy for her taste, she doubled the amount of soymilk to powder ratio. Just make sure you account for the additional calories.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
