Any lower BMI experience with fills?

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I was banded on March 2nd 2005. I have done pretty well so far, I started out at 185 and am now at 169. I had my first fill last Wed. (6 days ago) without flouro. In the few weeks before the fill I could eat anything I wanted. I did fine and felt restriction for the 1st 3 or 4 days after my fill, but sure enough yesterday and today I'm back to being able to eat like pre-band times!! He put 1.6cc's in my 4cc band, and said that should give me good restriction for a few months!! Needless to say I'm bummed about it being only a few days and I feel like its gone. I'm wondering since Im a lower BMI patient if I should expect to not feel the restriction as much as others?? I know my weight loss has been good up to this point and I shouldnt complain, but I've had to use as much willpower as before the band.....

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Monica

I guess I qualify as a lower BMI patient. My BMI was 37.7--something like that. (I paid for the surgery myself. My insurance company requires a 40 BMI). I think everyone is just different, and also surgeons are different, and the brands and sizes of lap bands are different. I had my Inamed lapband put on in Mexico and they give you no restriction at first. It's one month later and I'm still not ready for one. There is no way on earth I could eat a large meal now. The largest meal I've had to date--want to hear this? :) Went to Jack in the Box. Got their Southwest chicken pita--yum, has moist chicken, black Beans, corn, spices. I ate about half of it. I also had a craving for a shake. Got a SMALL chocolate shake--only had maybe 1/5 of it, and saved the rest in the freezer to try again 5 hours later or so. That's it--my biggest meal so far. I really am eating more "by the book" most days. High Protein, some yogurt, some soy Protein Powder blended shakes with frozen fruit, sipping Water all day (that's hard--I'd love to just gulp water), taking chewable Centrum Vitamins and Viactiv carmels for my Calcium, small portions of moist meats and chew, chew, chew. I'm a little puzzled by your story since just the band itself, with no fill, should give some restriction. But hey--some of us have more fat right in the area where banded, and when we lose fat in that particular area we'll feel less restriction. What brand is your band?

Hi Monica -

Your initial restriction from your fill was undoubtedly due to your stomach swelling after the adjustment. I would give it a few weeks to settle in before you decide this current fill is too little - you will probably find (like most of us) that your restriction can vary from day to day, and you may feel wide open one day and slammed shut the next.

My fills didn't really kick in until 4-6 weeks afterwards (no idea why).

I am not a lower BMI patient, but fills seem to be fills. Your fill level may tend to be a little higher than higher BMI patients (at first, anyway), but that would most likely be due to less fat around your stomach.

So the real answer is - this is not happening to you because you are a low BMI patient. This is a typical response to fills.

I am/was a BMI of 33.7. I can tell you that my doctor has told me that on lower BMI patients the band is not as naturally "tighter" on lower BMI patients. The band I get is the same as if I would have weighed 500 lbs rather than 220. He warned me I wouldn't have as much restriction as someone who is a higher BMI just because our stomachs aren't as big to begin with. He definitely said I would feel like I need a fill in the 6 weeks and I made my appointment for a fill before I even had surgery. And sure enough, I am now 3 weeks post op and I can eat ANYTHING I want. I surely don't eat a TON but I CAN eat WAY more than just a few ounces. I am counting the days until my fill on May 7th.

He also explained to me that lower BMI patients are "starting" where a larger BMI patient would be in the "middle" of their weight loss. Larger BMI patients will lose their weight rapidly at first, then slow down a lot in the middle. Since we are starting in what would be the "middle" so our weight loss is going to be a lot slower. (for example, a person weighing 380 may lose 60 lbs their first 2 months whereas a lower BMI patient will lose maybe 30 in 2 months as being normal). A higher BMI patient will see the VISUAL results a lot sooner whereas the lower BMI patient has more subtle results that are not visually as dramatic. But in the end of things, we will all look great and lose the weight we want to. Make sense?

I think some patients feel "restriction" without a fill. I am just unlucky enough to not be one of them. I do think it has to do with the size of your stomach when they insert the band and the amount of fat you carry around that particular organ.

But then again, I already knew I was a "super healer" and will heal VERY fast. I knew my swelling would go down quick. I even had surgery on Wed and was back to work on Monday. So by the second week I was completely misreble and could have eaten a horse! I was about to gnaw off my own arm! And I even looked at my husband strangely sometimes I think. ;)

Monica, my frist fill took a week for me to notice a difference. My second fill was instant and my third fill is fickle, somedays I have too much restriction and other days I have zero restriction, on the days with zero restriction I try and work with my band and my head has to do lots of the work. Let's hope you notice a difference after a few more days. Good Luck

Thanks for all the feedback. It's amazing how different everyone reacts! How long should I wait before going back to get a touch more? Today is the one week mark since my fill and I really don't feel a thing. I lost 3 pounds really quick the few days after my fill but am sure I'm well on my way to gaining that back now that I can eat and eat.... I'm trying to make the best choices, but since I'm not full it's hard to do (exactly what started this rollercoaster in the first place!) Maybe I should wait a week more and then make an appt. for a bit more. I have visions of being the first person who gets a complete fill up of 4cc's and can still eat like a horse......

I plan to get banded by Dr. Huacuz 4/26 and I was concerned because of the whole Mexico thing, mainly because family and friends are throwing up the concern. Thus, I just wanted to know do you have any regrets or complications from having the surgery done there? Any feedback you can give to relax my mind will be greatly appreciated.

hi NewLease:

I had my band put on my Dr. Huacuz, and my girlfriend also had hers by Dr. Huacuz the same day. I did get an infection in my incision, but still would do it all again. (I just would know how to recognize the symptoms sooner this time). My girlfriend did find and didn't have any complications at all. My girlfriend is flying back down next week for her 1st fill. In fact she will be there the same day you are! I still have restriction from just the band, so I'm not going back down yet. Best of luck to you.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
