Hi, all! I'm feeling suprisingly well for the top of my 4th day out of surgery. I'm gaining more stamina and mobility each day. Right after I woke up I felt fine. In fact, I woke up with a smile on my face! :frown3: My first wave of nausea hit me when I tried to walk to the bathroom and then for the first 8-12 hours after that. I dry-heaved several times so they gave me something to prevent the nausea. By the first morning after the surgery, the nausea was gone. I had trouble sleeping the first night, but mostly because the nurses were constantly waking me to check vitals, get me up walking, go to the bathroom, etc.:( I'm a 'tummy sleeper' so having to sleep on my back because I'm too tender to even turn on my side is quite a challenge. I have taken the Vicoden at night at 1/2 the dose to help me get to sleep. I truly have not had what I would call 'pain' as such. It is more like just an uncomfortable feeling you have when you've pulled or have sore muscles in your abdominal area. I've been pretty lucky with the gas. Before surgery I hardly every experienced gas or Constipation :grouphug:, and so far I've not had much gas and no constipation (but no bm, either):confused2:... I have had a couple of instances of discomfort in my shoulder, but I've read that this sensation is associated with the gas from the surgery. I've definitely had that 'rumbling' like mama59 mentioned and the hunger pains, as well. But sometimes with all that going on inside, I have trouble deciding what is what! Anyway, I have a great Protein Powder (nutritionally speaking) and it doesn't taste awful, either. I took my first shower since surgery this morning and took the Patches off. The incisions are still covered by the steri-strips. I go for my 1 week post-op follow up on Tuesday. I think I'll try to go back to work Wednesday (8 days after surgery) My job is sedentary, as well, but I, too am worried about what to wear that will be comfortable? I'm anxious to see what the doc's scales say on Tuesday! biggrin.gif Looking forward to hearing about everyone's progress! BTW - I don't know how to activate the 'ticker', either....

Hey newme... I got banded on the 24th and am doing remarkably well also. I had some serious gas pains the couple of days, but started to be able to 'pass' them yesterday and am feeling much better today. I am your same weight and age, but I have a couple inches on you (5'6"). I want to lose 80-90 lbs I think by my bandaversary as well. Based on my observations, it looks like ON AVERAGE people tend to lose at lease 10lbs/month for the 1st several months which makes it quite possible to reach your goal. Good luck...

Thanks for replying, COSkinnygirl! I'm glad you're doing well, too! Are you tired of broth, yet (lol)? Do you anticipate returning to work (assuming you work outside your home) w/i a week or so?

Thanks for sharing your post op experience. It is very helpful for thoes of us who are getting ready for surgery. I kind of want to know what to expect even though I know that everyone will have their own experiences. Generally speaking, it sounds like it is tolerable. I have had laparoscopic surgery about 20 years ago it wasn't too bad. I just want it to be over with and on my way to recovery. What is the name of that Protein powder you like so much? Becky

The name of the Protein Powder I am using is GR2 (google online). I did get other info from another bander who uses a powder called Unjury. I googled it and it sounds as good or maybe better than what I'm using AND it's about 1/2 the cost!!! I'm going to ask my doctor which he thinks is best. Oh...and that other bander also said that there is some sort of Protein Drink (not sure if it's Water or what) found at Walmart called 'Fortress', but I don't have any other info on that. Wishing you the best of luck as you move towards your surgery date!

Thank you so much for the information on the Protein Drinks. I also heard about one called Pro 5 which has 32 grams of Protein and 2 grams of carbs. My friend told me the the Cookies and cream flavor was pretty good. I am going to try a couple of them and see which I will stick with for my fast. Thanks again!

My Dr. gives everyone 30 days off - even for sedentary jobs. I took my 30 days - you need to rest after surgery. I could have gone back after 3 weeks but wanted to relax at home for another week. I am back at work now and am still having some pain after sitting all day.

I am going to take a week off and if I need more I am sure my doctor will give me more days off. I hope I can tolerate it. I may just have to work 4-6 hrs instead of 8. We'll see how it goes.

My Dr. said only Tylenol for OTC pain killer, and they just happen to make an adult formula in liquid form, it helped me get through the day. Just wanted to let the people headed for surgery to know. Good Luck Everyone!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
