Lap band versus gastric bypass - newby

Recommended Posts

Just had my first bariatric visit - my doctor has a great 6-month pre-surgery program that consists of seminars, dr visits, phys consults. Great reading on this website - I'm a binge eater and a sugar hound - and after reading some of the comments, I'm wondering if the lap band is right for me?? Once a binger, always a binger?? Will I just find more inventive ways to eat candy (melt it in my mouth) and will I eat mass quantities and hurt myself?

I was told to eat 60 grams of Protein a day to lose belly fat - I'll get weight in next month. How do I know how much protein is in the foods I eat? If I actually start losing weight, will I nee the surgery?

Lots of questions - scary and excited!!

Thanks for any and all help!!

Hi Mom. As unhelpful as it sounds, here's my take: Only you can say if the lapband is right for you. At the seminars you'll attend, you should be told that the band is not a magic device that takes away your desire to eat. The band is a tool that can help you to feel more full with less food. Others may diasgree with me, but I say you know yourself best of all. If you don't have the committment to eat right and follow the band rules, the truth is your weight loss will be minimal. And who wants to go through surgery for minimal results?

However, if you can committ to following the rules, the band is a powerful weight loss tool. You should go to the seminars to get more info to help you make up your mind. Good luck!

Great advise Jack. I am having surgery soon and hope, with the tool of lap band to be able to change my eating habits. Right now I don't seem to have that sensation of fullness when I eat. I am trying to learn to eat slower and chew my food more and put my fork down between bites. I hope the band will give me the feeling of fullness that will allow me to stop when I am satisfied.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
