How do you handle an 8 month plateau?

Recommended Posts

I am now 8 months since surgery and have lost 20 pounds. I have not had proper restriction since day one. Then my port flipped early March and I had to have surgery to get it fixed. My band was empty until April 3rd and I now have 2cc's in my 4cc band. Still no restriction and no weightloss. To make things worst for me I've gained 5 pounds from the 20 I lost.

Discouragement is taking over me and I am becoming more and more obsessed with this band. How do I handle this?:tongue_smilie:

I think I'm going to cease on the exercise. I'm working 45 minutes every morning on my treadmill and weights twice a week. I'm eating 1200 calories a day.

do you think that it is a good idea to quit exercising? if you are having problems losing weight, perhaps you should keep exercising, and eat more calories, focusing on healthy foods. maybe you are one of the ones that need more cals to lose weight.

Announce goal weight and call it maintenance, lol. That's exactly what I did. But really I *do* want to lose more so deep down, I know I have not made my goal and am not working my band to full potential. The fact that I have a BMI of under 23 now is irrelevant if I want a BMI of 21.

I'm going for another fill on Monday. That's all I need I think, I've wanted to be "sensible" and not too tight and I felt my doctor's attitude about not filling more or trying to lose more, but its my body and I want to run a half marathon and to do well at that and remain injury free, I could easily stand to be another 15lb lighter. That's still not an unhealthy weight for me, although its low in the range.

So yes, another fill, a recommitment, and back to what I do best, lots of running and not trying to cross train so much which in reality has just resulted in back injury and less running overall.

How much do u need to loose... because u said that u only have a 4cc band, that's not that much of a restriction.....at 4cc im thinking... at the max and u have 1/2 of your band filled now... why such the small band size...Did they give u an option

Do you need a fill? At 2 CC I can eat all day in my 4cc band. Change up everything. That's what I do when I hit a plateau. Change your exercise. Your body is used to walking and so try some jogging intervals, go to the elliptical, ride bikes outside, or go to a kickboxing class or something. In addition, change the foods you are eating. Do you constantly increase your weights? Are you sweating like a dog when you exercise or is it a friendly walk? Frankly, I thought I was a slow loser. I was exercising about 20 hours a week and eating well and didn't lose crap (25 lbs all of last year). SO, I got a body bugg and found out that all my exercise wasn't burning as much as I thought and I was eating more than I thought. Since Jan 8 when I got the bugg, I've lost about 25 lbs!!! It really helped me. SO, I suggest you log your food ... complete with fat/protein./cals and really see where you are.

See if your doctor can do a resting metabolic test. I had one done and found out in order for me to lose, I need to stick to 1,000 calories per day. I have a very slow metabolism.

I was at a plateau for a year but ever since i upped my exercise, and by that i mean doing half an hour more than i used to, the weight is starting to come off :3

If you haven't found proper restriction it's better to go for another fill, no?

It's very true that our bodies get used to the same routine and exercise needs to be changed. My trainer tells me this every time I see him.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
