Exercise doesn't equal weight loss???

Recommended Posts

I wasn't exercising or walking like I should in the past but in the last three weeks I've started walking, lifting weights and doing a little Tae Bo. I was at a stand still with my weight loss nothing for months and now in the last 3 weeks I have dropped 7 pounds. I have to admit that I feel better, I eat less and I have more energy. I have made a decision to commit to walking at least a mile 5 days a week but I've been doing it 6 days because it makes me feel so good and I've actually been walking more than a mile.

I find that walking around subdivisions verses a regular track helps me to walk longer and actually enjoy it because of the scenary. I find the school and hospital tracks to be a little boring and they have a tendency to make me lose interest. I find myself doing a short jog from time to time while walking.

the only problem I see with using too much exercise to lose weight and so you can eat more, is if for some reason you stop the exercising, like an injury or because you were only exercising until you reach goal, is then you will be used to eating those extra calories and it can be hard to stop doing that.

If you know you are the type to always exercise then you'll probably be fine, but for me, not relying on excessive exercise is best.

A three mile walk 3 to 4 times a week is all I can manage on an irrregular basis. I know it's good for me, but doesn't always get fitted in, so I prefer to concentrate on the calories and food and let exercise when I do it, be a bonus.

Wow,

Who knew there were such varied opinions on exercise and eating. But in some way, I think most people are saying the same thing. Eat X-amount, exercise X+Y amount = weight loss. As long as you are not trying to build muscle. So the key is to move, move, move and watch what you eat. Thanks everyone for your opinion. Somehow what my nut says doesn't seem so ridiculous anymore.

It seems like you are saying that 3 miles 3-4 times a week is somehow insignificant. It's not. 3 miles probably takes you most of an hour, and your doing it 3 times a week, so this is good exercise. it's a lot more than many people do!

hey shortgal - i agree with your statement; after some reflection we (DH & myself) had to admit that exercise is something that HAS to be part of our life. while we were dating we were so active: hiking/skiing/mountain bike/or the gym.... because we LOVE food so much. the minute that stopped - we got fluffy.

when we got banded we made a "pact" to be active as much as possible & since i have a form of RA, i tend to be in pain when not moving.

I have the bulging muscles that we girls don't want. My mother walked past me as I was blow-drying my hair (getting ready for a date as a teen), and told me that I had bigger shoulders than my linebacker boyfriend. Hurtful.

I exercise to maintain the extra muscle mass that I developed to carry around my excess weight. Without exercise, some of my weight loss would also be muscle loss, and since muscle burns calories I want that to be the last thing to go.

I do lots of cardio vs. traditional strength-building. When I was younger, muscle fatigue was the limiting factor for exercise. Now that I'm older, it's my cardiac endurance that's lacking. I just can't run long enough/fast enough to make my muscles sore--at least not without passing out from lack of oxygen.

Exercise not only helps me, but boosts up my morale. I circuit train at curves. The cool thing is while I'm building lean muscle I'm burning off more fat and tightening up. Sure the scale isn't always kind, but the inches!!! OMG! I've gone from a size 26 to a 14 in the last year. I would say those are fantastic results

thanks!

It does take me just under an hour to walk the three miles and it feels good, but winter time gets hard to fit it in consistently, that's why i don;t like to count on exercise for weight control, I'd rather do that by food intake, but when I do exercise I feel good and it's bonus calories burned!

Just moving in general is good for us, gardening, house cleaning, grocery shopping it's all some activity.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
