Surgery Cancelled due to RX Diet pills!!

Recommended Posts

 surgeon put me on Phentermine 3 weeks ago to get the max loss possible b4 surgery & I went for pre op appt at the hospital this morning & anesthesia Dr refused to do my surgery because a pt went into cardiac arrest last week on the table & anesthsia found out that it was due to diet pills. Apparently they have found out that all diet pills counteract the drugs they give to put you to sleep & cause heart arythmias & skipes in blood pressure. So now I have to be off the phentermine at least 10 days before they will do it. So now I am resched for 4/18 instead of 4/11. I am so bummed, this is my 2nd time doing the 10 day liquid diet & 2nd time being cancelled, 1st time was cuz of insurance. I am glad they arent taking chances w/ my life, but really sad to have to wait & continue w/ liquids for another 10 days. :frown:

Thank goodness they rescheduled! I would much rather have to wait an extra week or two than face the possibility of cardiac arrest! I know it's frustrating when you are ready to go. Count your blessings and have a great surgery on the 18th!

I called my surgeons office just this morning to ask if the meds I am on are OK. They told me not to worry about it and talk to the anestiologist next week at my pre op :frown:

No diet pills for me tho.

Oh Lynne! I'm sorry you are having to go through so much trying to have your surgery. I hope the rest of your journey goes well. Keep us all posted on how you are doing!

Yeah, I don't know why any doctor would put you on diet pills before a weight loss surgery! that was just dumb in my opinion. Of course, I don't know why lap band doctors put people on a liquid diet when a south beach diet does the same exact thing AND teaches people how to eat properly before getting banded. The liquid diet doesn't teach crap. Even though this has nothing to do with your post.. it just makes me so mad!

That sucks. I'm so sorry that this happened to you. At least they decided not to risk your life by going ahead with the surgery.

I totally agree... I'd much rather wait another week for the operation vs. the unthinkable. Hang in there... the days will fly by and this will be a distant memory!

When I saw my doc for the first time and they gave me a bunch of typed pages, on the first page in very very large letter were the words: "If you are taking phentermine, you must be off it for 14 days prior to surgery". It wasn't an issue because I wasn't taking it, but on the next page it listed meds and whether or not to take them the morning of surgery. I took my high blood pressure pills but not the stuff for diabetes.

What a bummer that u can't have the surgery yet. But you just need to remember that another week is not that bad at least you have your life to live!! I've never heard of a surgeon putting a band pt. on diet pills either. I have heard of the dreadful liquid diet, but luckily my surgeon doesn't even do that very often. Good luck with your band and I hope you end up feeling about yours the same way I feel about mine, it's my best friend of almost 2 1/2 yrs. God Bless You

Wow you know it isn't cool that you have to have it r/s but just think... you would not want to be the 1 in 1000 that something happens to you know... And think about how because they are making you wait.. the lives you are helping to save with this post... Also giving a heads up like myself... Because i take Adipex-p which is the brand name to phentermine so I am going to stop taking it as of today. Thanks again for posting this as well..

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
