IMHO=This whole Lapband adventure is about taking care of ourselves in the best way we can. We have already burdened our bodies with years of excess weight and associated comorbidities. It is time to make a commitment to a healthy lifestyle. An important component of this is regular medical care and heeding your physician's advice. I know that I plan to do as much as I can to make my lapband journey the best it can be. It's not about self-denial, but about self love.

Very well put !!

Mindy

I believe people are asking us our opinions of what we may have done. This isn't advice to anyone to do it. The reason for the board is to get that honesty. Should people follow their physicians' advice? Of course but obviously it is clear that all physicians' have different approaches to the same surgery. That is the point...

sharon:)

You were using the fact that you are a nurse to bolster your opinion. Now you claim you were just giving an opinion. Okay, you were giving an opinion while explaining you are a nurse.

Maybe a better approach would be to encourage the person to hang in there for a few more days. We can all do this, I did it, lots of people have done it. It's not the end of the world. Is it hard? You bet it is! But it's harder to deal with a slip than it is to do a few more days of liquids.

I think that is great advice and something i personally need to remember myself as well when it comes to posting on here.

I tend to just say " follow your docs advice' and tend to leave out the "hang in there you can do this "

So I agree !!

Thanks for the reminder

Mindy

I was just at my support group for a couple of hours and my surgeon was there to answer questions. He said the rates of slips are increasing daily and he can only attribute that to the fact that some doctors are advancing the diets before the band has the chance to heal on the stomach.

I paid a lot of money for my band but that is not the reason I stayed on a liquid diet for 4 weeks. It was because I had read this board for hours and hours before I had my surgery. I was too afraid I would lose my band a few years from now. This band is such a gift. I never thought I would see myself in these sizes ever again. I would pay the money over again if I had to, but what if my band could not be replaced? I never want to be fat again!

the fact that I am a nurse only validates the fact that I have a clearer understanding of the pathophysiology of the body as well the fact that physicians heed to their own opinions and experiences as to what is right or wrong. I feel patients should understand that what their physician says is what they should go by. It is "ok" that they also realize that other physicians do things different. That doesn't make their doctor right or wrong. The question here was what our physicians' were having us do. We answered. So we shouldn't be penalized for providing that information. This really should be the end of this as we have beat it to death.

not to beat a dead horse, but here is the original question ...

I am six days post op and supposed to be on liquids only for 10 days. Has anyone violated this policy? I would love to have some chili or potato Soup...

basically - has anyone not followed their doctor's orders and ate before they should have...

i've seen MANY threads here like this one (at least a few a month) and like it's been said, the original poster is looking for validation that it is indeed OK to cheat.

and i believe since it comes from a nurse that 'you'll be just fine' gives it extra credibility that she will indeed be fine and eat ... and that is not necessarily the case.

unfortunately, i've come to the realization that people are going to do what they want to do. if they truly want to eat on a liquid diet, they will eat... all we can do is tell them its not a good idea and why (some/most surgeons dont explain the why)...

So I fully explained the why. Ad nauseum.

And it doesn't seem to make a darned bit of difference.

What can ya do? Nada.

Just hope that we will all be okay and every one of us will be successful and none of us will lose our bands. That's what I want.

If you are on full liquids then I would advise blending the chili or potato Soup and then straining it. If you are still on clear, nope. Stick to it. You onlu have 4 more days. Why ruin it? You are going to have a lifetime to eat chili and potato soup. My doc had me on liquids for 5 weeks post op and one week before. You can do it. If you feel it's virtually impossible, talk to your doc.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.
