Slimmy - I don't have the "science" behind they why, but in my case I really just lost the craving for my "Carbs" which I defined as the P's:

Pretzles

pizza

Potatos / chips

Pasta

I was never a "sweet" tooth, but give me something salty ... YUM. My total downfall. Right now, I feel I have to add some Carbs into my diet (complex ones) because I'm working out pretty hard & some days I get a little dizzy & my trainer is like you have to eat more carbs...Can't be 100% Protein. He's right...but for me in the beginning I had to break my addiction so to speak, and cut them out all together - None in the house, ya get the idea.

Hope you get more answers -

Simple carbs like the 4 P's mentioned above hit your system and burn quickly, just like sugar. There's not much to them so they don't keep you feeling full, so you get hungry again quickly.

A complex carb has Fiber so your body spends more time breaking it down, it releases more slowly into your system so you stay fuller longer.

Protein releases yet more slowly and keeps you feeling full longer but a diet with no Fiber will make you constipated. So it's important to have some fiber and that means you'll get some carbs.

You can choose very low carb vegetables, like Atkins, but that's really not much fun and they allow for some seriously high fat. It all goes to pot when you stop doing it.

Learning to eat a well rounded diet with lean Protein and good complex carbs and some non trans fats is the best way to feed your body healthily for a life time.

But it's not easy to do when high fat, simple carbs taste so good...hehehe and they are cheap, well advertised, and on every corner. But that's a different rant.

It is generally considered best to eat low gylcemic carbs. you can look up a gylcemic chart online. Basically, the higher gylcemic carbs require our bodies to release more insulin. We get hungrier faster with higher gylcemic foods. Protein, lower gylcemic and higher fiber foods keep us satisified longer.

So the carbs that are the best to eat are green veggies, some fruits and whole grains as they add fiber to our diets as well.

Basically, eating low to no carbs puts your body into a high fat burning mode. This is why Atkins got so popular cause your body would burn fat even wtih no exercise. Basically sugars are fast burning and if your not exercising then your body thinks that your body doesn't need to use the energy and goes into fat storage mode. With no carbs your body process the energy slowly and thinks your body needs the energy now and goes into fat burning mode.

This is why alot of atikins diet feel they have more energy.

i wouldnt suggest an Atkins approach, as your brain cells need the carbs. a well balanced diet, w/ good carbs, good fats, is healthy. having a higher percentage of Protein is good, for the reasons already mentioned.

if you are doing any weight training, its good to have some carbs about 30 min. to an hour before, for the energy. then follow up afterwards w/ heavy Protein meal.

i have a close friend who is very into nutrition and body building. he has given me great advice.

My pre-op diet is high Protein, low carb. I have a kidney disorder and didn't want to eat an over abundance of animal protein as it is hard on my kidneys. So, I try to get in as much soy protein as possible. Instead of whey Protein Powder, I got a soy protein powder that I mix with lite, low carb soy milk. There are many very good meat alternatives if you look for them. One of my favorites is Melissa's soy chorizo which I find with the fresh veggies at my local store. I know most people cringe at the thought of soy anything. Especially since most people think tofu. It's not that bad and you get used to it. When I found out about my kidneys I bought several vegetarian cookbooks. There are many creative ways to eat soy protein. I never would have thought that I would eat it, much less like it. We've always been huge meat eaters. Don't get me wrong, I still love my animal protein, I just try to eat less of it than I used to. So anyway, if you are worried about your kidneys you might want to try it. It's still protein, but is easier on the kidneys. That's my two cents. Good luck!

Well i am going to stick to good wholegrain carbs when have carbs and up the Protein, but dont know how i fitted that frankfurta i had for lunch on corn thins and quarter of cup of peas for lunch into the equation, shouldnt of had such junk -- frankfurta, but hey it was boiled not a fried greasy sausage so when for the better alternative, got to keep the better choices happening, even as in this case being the better of the two evils.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
