Feeling blue....need encouragement

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I think it's more gloomy inside my house than it is outside! I had my first fill of 1 c.c. on Monday. I am so starved today and I ate lots of food- a cup of pasta!!! And then two hours later I was hungry again and ate 2 eggs with a tad of cheese. Then I was hungry two hours after that and ate 2 yogurt cups. BTW, in between, I drank lots of Water. I must not be tight enough. My doctor doesn't use anything for the fill, just feels for the port and shoves the needle in. I am going to call tomorrow, but I am feeling so down about this. I've waited so long for the surgery and now I've had it done and nothing. :-(

Kirsten,

Most of the band doctors will allow you one "refill" if you feel you don't get restriction. I would suggest calling him or her and asking him about that. Also let the Doctor know that you would prefer the area to be numbed with a freezing agent so it does not hurt as much. You deserve to be treated with respect. I also remember someone saying that they sometimes will have a delayed restriction from their fills. You may find that in a couple of days you feel more restriction but having only 1 cc in your band may not be enough. Hope that information helps!

Kirsten, it doesnt sound like you are eating all that much..are you eating less then you did pre band? It is what you are eating is the problem in my opinion

When you drink Water , are you waiting an hour between meals to eat, if you are drinking Water too soon after you eat you are washing the solids thru the band which makes you hungry again quicker. Yougurt goes right through the band which is why you could be hungrier quicker. eggs are a soft Protein too which will not last as long as hard Proteins in your pouch, try hard Proteins like chicken, steak, ground beef, chicken works the best for me in staying in my pouch the longest. You seems to be in the soft food syndrome, got to get out of that, soft foods go right through the band and offer not satisfaction from hunger. Protein also helps with hunger, by what you said you ate today, it does not look like you had much protein. Carbs crave carbs, so the Pasta probably made you crave more carbs like the yogurt... Try starting your day tomorrow with strictly protein and I bet you will notice a difference in your hunger level all day long. DOnt be doscouraged, change some of the things you are eating and see if that helps..good luck and hang in there :)

I was going to post a reply, but Michelle said it all! Also my doc advocates drinking a glass of cold Water right before eating a meal--it tightens the band so you'll eat less. Good luck & let us know.

Just another thought. How fast did you hope to lose? You do know that lower BMI will have a slower weight loss, right? Are you eating half or less of what your NORMAL intake was before being banded? Are you exercising? It is quite common for the first fill to not be all that noticeable. If you receive a fill and don't show any loss and are doing all those other things correctly, then I'd ask for another fill. Sometimes, it takes up to 3 or 4 fills to get restriction, especially if you don't have alot of fat around your tummy to begin with. It will come.. patience.

Also, Dr Ren is a very highly acclaimed band doctor. She has great results and many very happy patients. Trust her, she knows what she's doing.

I agree with the others, rethink your menu. More Protein for more than staying full, you want to stay healthy. I try to stay away from all starches, especially bread and Pasta. When I've fixed spaghetti, I've used the wheat and my family never noticed.

Are you eating because you're really hungry or are you bored. I know when I stay home all day I eat much more or think I'm hungry more often than if I'm not here by the fridge and pantry.

Good luck stay in touch and nobody's fussing at ya, just giving you food for thought, excuse the pun.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
