In Need of Advice

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I need some insight on the lap procedure. My insurance has approved me for GB, but I am thinking that I would really prefer a LB. I have BC/BS of MD; do you think they would renege on my apporval for the other surgery. I would really prefer the lap procedure for all the obvious reasons. I want to call my insurance provider on Monday, but I am a bit apprehensive.

Any words of advice? The Doctor who got me approved for GB does not do the LB procedure.

Thanks guys!

First off check all the benifits of one proceedure over the other. Decided for yourself which one you want. If you decide the g/b is it then your all set. If you feel you'd prefer the lapband then call and talk to them. Just calling to find out if your covered shold not reflect on what the have alreay approved.

Good luck with what ever you do

There is no harm in calling the insurance company and asking which WL procedures are covered. If they don't mention the Lap Band. Ask about it. A few people on these boards have had policies that exclude the lap band while others do not. It's totally up to your particular policy that your employer group purchases.

I'm not banded yet, my goal is to 100lbs lighter by this time next year. Your goals???

CJ90, Greg is right. Insurers can't renege on approvals already given just because you're asking about a different procedure. But it sounds like you have a lot of research yet to do before making a decision. Please feel free to ask whatever questions you may have and perhaps we can shed some light! :)

You guys are great. I'm reading and asking questions. I have been researching June of last year and thought GB was right for me. Lap band is better for me. I'll let you all know what happens.

Hi, CJ, good luck on your journey for better health. Please do as much research as you can so you'll know how the band works and what will be expected of you for it to work properly. We look forward to hearing more from you.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
