Swimming after surgery???

Recommended Posts

Hi. I am going to be in San Diego with my husband and daughter in April. I was wondering about swimming, how long before your incisions were healed over enough for a swim. I will either be 2 weeks or 3 weeks post surgery and was hoping I'd be able to take my 16 month old in the pool while my husband was in some meetings. I'll ask my surgeon when I see him but was wondering about some of your experiences. Thanks!!

I just had surgery and my Dr. gives us a book of rules - it says we have to wait 2 weeks to swim. (Not bad, I would have thought it would have been longer).

My doc said a minimum of 4 weeks. Better check with yours to make sure.

I was told 4wks as well, but I took that to be my own pool...Might want to check RE: public pool for sanitary purposes...

Ohhh, RATS!!! We are staying at this amazing hotel with 2 large(and heated) swimming pools right on the bay in San Diego.....I was really hoping to take my daughter swimming with a bay view! I wonder if I could cover them with tegaderm or something?? I'll have to talk to my surgeon and see what he says. Thanks!!

I am exactly 2 weeks post op (just got back from San Diego actually). My doc said I could go swimming once the incisions are closed. Mine are healed and the scabs are falling off (gross i know sorry) but I think I would wait another week to be on the safe side. I guess it depends on how fast you will heal. Maybe you could just stay in the shallow end with your baby and not get the incisions in the Water?

My doc said 8 weeks for baths or swimming. But then again he also said 8 weeks for sex HAHAHA not!

My doc also said 4 weeks, but I had a problem with my incisions spitting out sutures. Just when I thought I was almost healed over, these little thread things started popping out. I had to wait an additional three weeks for them to fall out and heal back over. It was a pain because swimming is my exercise of choice.

My doc said 3-4 weeks...but at my 2 week post-op check up he said that I was cleared to take baths and get in the pool (YAY, I love swimming!) I guess I'm a fast healer. Definitely check with him/her though an infection would not be a good thing!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
