I'm 4 weeks out from surgery, I'll have my first fill in 2 weeks. I can't wait! I feel like I didn't have anything done! I have a 4cc band. My doctor said most people are satisfied with between 2 and 3 ccs. What is your experience?

My weight loss is mostly presurgical. I've only lost 8 since my actual surgery. I've been disappointed. I'm really looking forward to my first fill, Feb. 27th.

Hi April, this is really a tough question. For every person, it is different. Some people have proper restriction with very little in their band, while others it takes much more. And, as you lose weight you lose restriction and have to have additional fills.

The best thing to do is not base what you need on what everyone else is doing. Your body will let you know what the right amount of fill is for you. And, definitely don't rush it and be too aggressive with the fills either. It is better to go slowly until you reach proper restriction than to be too aggressive and be overfilled.

They're still using the 4cc bands? Wow, I thought everyone had gone to the Advanced Platform or Realize bands.

In any case, Susan makes a great point, it is soooooooo different for everyone. It depends on how thick your stomach walls are, how much of a fat pad you have on your stomach, how much you lose of that fat pad and how fast you lose it, what "sweet spot" means to you, etc. Some people are satisfied and can lose with NO fill, some folks require being almost full to be satisfied.

I hope you glean some good info from this thread, I believe there are actually a few more polls asking this same question on this forum, you might want to try advanced search and see if you can find them. Also, scroll down this page and check out Paulax's thread about it, too.

It is so hard to say what you will be happy with, perhaps check out Wendell's thread about how the band work, fills and unfills in the Fills forum if you haven't read it yet. It is a great thread!

I have a 4 cc band with 1.9 in it, and I am generally a bit too tight, and will get stuck or occasionally pba couple times a week. My husband has a 10 cc band with 7 cc in it, and he can eat three times as much as I can and has never pb'd. We were banded the same day.

This is an unanswerable question. At what point are you talking about? One month from surgery? Six months? Two years? The fill I have today may be perfect, but not enough next week. In the beginning, at least, it is a constant process of re-adjusting to you and your weight loss.

3 is too tight, 2.5 is a bit loose. I'm at 2.75 (I think) and doing fine.

I'm at 2cc in my 4cc band, since the beginning of december. I think this is a wonderful spot for me. I could be more restricted, but I'm loosing well and like this level. Only time will tell when/if I need another fill.

I'm guessing the 28 lbs most likely includes a pre-op diet weight loss as well.....

I was banded on 1/17/08 and lost 14 lbs on the pre-op.....but my ticker is set up to include all weight loss from the time I started the band process and first consult with weigh in. I'll go for my first fill on 2/28.....not even sure what kind or size band I have. Hopefully they can tell me that when I show up for my fill.....how scary that I don't know this!!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
