Post op diahreaah? (Don't know if I spelled that right)

Recommended Posts

I can't find a thread for this so I am sorry if there is already one posted. I was wondering if it was normal to have diahreaah post op? I saw something on tv that said it was bad if you do have it post op but it seems to me that just having liquid it would be normal. Anybody else have this problem post op? Is it something I need to be concerned about? I feel fine otherwise. I actually went shopping the day after surgery and doing normal things. I haven't really been hungry and having to force myself to eat. Please let me know if any of you have experienced this also. I was banded on the 4th. Have a good day everyone. Christi

I developed the liquid out condition about 3 days after surgery. I think I was plugged up before that from the aenesthesia. As far as I know its not a problem. Just stay hydrated. I went back to normal when I went to soft foods.

Thanks for the quick reply. I looked on another lap band site and it seems to be a normal thing for many so I guess unless it keeps on I won't call my surgeon.

Sure...it happens. POP, post op poop. :)

I am on maintenance and haven't pooped right in a year! When the body goes from tons of food to barely nothing...it goes hay wire!

Started Alli this morning in hopes the side effects will help assist me.

Congrats on getting to goal. The effects of the 1st Alli pill lasted 2 days and I refused to take more. I suggest wearing large pads.

Very normal, especially if you're not showing any other symptoms of being sick. Put it this way. Our bodies aren't designed to make a solid out of a liquid. If you had a liquid pre-op diet, there has already been a period where most remaining solids will have left your body. Then during your surgery you got pure fluids, and there's a liquid phase post-op. The mantra is "Liquid in, liquid out." :)

Yeah, I was taking Alli and went on a business trip/trade show. I'll spare you the details, but WHATEVER you do, take an extra pair or pants...........................and underwear............................and maybe socks.

I've seen Alli at the store but never really looked at it. From your post I'm guessing it's a fat blocker? Ugh, a friend of mine took whatever the last big one and would have huge oil slicks anytime anything digestive happened.

Are you still able to take alli with the band? My surgeon didn't make me do a pre op diet because I had lost weight before the surgery for my sisters wedding and I was taking Phentermine but he doesn't want me taking them or any other diet pills post op because he says it defeats the purpose of the band and thats totally fine with me because I don't really like the way they make me feel anyways. Are you able to swallow the pills whole? I am asking because I was told to crush my birth control up into powder or chew it but they are so small I want to ask him if it would be ok to swallow them instead. I hate the way they taste crushed up. Yuck. Thanks for all the replies guys. Have a good day. Christi

I was plugged up for a week after surgery. It was hell. diahhreah would have been a welcome situation. Unfortunately, I'm now 10 weeks out and still have a problem going to the bathroom. It was always easy for me. Now I strain, go 2 - 3 days without going (I used to go every day, sometimes twice). I have to say, that so far this is the one negative of being banded. I don't feel good when I'm irregular, and hard BMs just plain hurt.

This is SUCH a convenient thread for me to read today. I'm 3 days post-op and just started gettting diarrea yesterday. I spoke with the nurse and she said it is very normal and could likely last for 3 weeks. It's worth mentioning again....but STAY HYDRATED!! I had really bad gas issues the last couple of days and the pooping seems to be aleviating that problem. Other than that, can't believe how good I feel only 3 days after surgery....wooo hooo!!

I'm 6 days post op and I've had diarrhea since day 3. It was bad at first, but less frequent now. I do have terrible gas that never seems to go away. I'm going to ask the doctor about it at my appointment on Wednesday.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
