banded 1/30 - why am I hungry?

Recommended Posts

You feel hungry because you are hungry! That's totally normal. Not everyone who had surgery on the same day or same week as you will start feeling hungry at the same time. It is different for everyone. (and everything about the band is different for everyone so get used to it!!!) The band is not ready to do it's job when it is 'installed'. They just put it around your stomach and, without adjustment (fills) it is just sitting there and you can basically eat like before surgery. You have restriction at first because you are swollen from surgery. Some people don't feel hungry for one week. Some don't feel hungry for one month. Some don't feel hungry for six months. You are healing. You are put on liquids and soft foods because it is important for your new band to heal. You aren't supposed to necessarily lose weight right now (although some people do and you might.) Concentrate on healing and obeying your doctor's instructions and once you start getting fills you will feel less hunger. It can take several fills to get to that place, though. I have had four and am not quite there. So the main thing with the band is to be patient. It is a slow process. Let your body heal.

Hi Grace, you just got banded it takes a while depending on the sz band you have. Your going to be hungry and not have good restriction until your band is adjusted. I was banded in sept of 07 and as of this past week i finally have very good restriction almost to much i think. This all takes time so be patient it might take several fills before your on the road to some good weight loss and feeling full.

good luck

It's a piece of cake!

I was banded on 12th Feb. I have been on slimfast shakes (220cals each) 3 per day and 2 Soups ('cream of' type but low cal). My doc told me that I could have anything that would go through a straw. After the Soup (200ml) I feel like I just had a Sunday dinner. I am having 1000cals per day

(6' male). I know for a fact that this will make fat melt off and I think its about the right compromise. I get hunger pangs, I mean real hunger, but a drink of Water makes it go away.

Come on ladies, its in the mind. You can do it!!

PS, I cant beleive how much rubbish there is on TV!

I get some pains in my back and under my shoulder blade, on the other side of where my band is. Is that what feeling full is?

I can't imagine 11 days out!!

ok well maybe i'm reading the signs of "fullness" wrong. When I'm just about done eating it's because I'm feeling chest/shoulder dulling pain ... Maybe thats the sign of fullness?

I just ate 4oz bended yogurt and 4oz Soup and I'm feeling a little pain in my upperback/shoulders/chest.....

Is that what others go thru?

You were only banded a few days ago? I was hungry too (I've been banded for 6 months now). I found that as long as I drank all the fluids I wanted it was bearable. Some people dont feel full until their bands are almost full, so dont worry, your body will adjust and you will get better at recognising fullness! And some days are different to others as well...yesterday I ate Breakfast, then 3 bread rolls, 2 eclairs, a small bag of chips and then a double sized dinner (I was celebrating something). A terrible diet I know, but today I've had a a yoghurt and 1/2 a cup of oats and it's now dinner time and I'm STILL full!

Nuff,

It might be advisable to find other "non-food" ways of celebrating. This is the kind of mindset that ends up causing problems. Not to mention it doesn't help your weight loss at all. Just a suggestion.

I can't for the life of me understand why people will do this after going through the pain and trauma of having a band fitted. I read so many that are not losing....why not? I think the answer is obvious.

I have the weakest will-power, but I have lost 23lbs in the 2 weeks since I started my pre-op diet, simply because of the commitment I feel I have made.

I know we cringe when we see someone that says they ate 2 eclairs at one time, BUT it's easy for you, after being banded only 6 days, to not completely understand the mind set or level of restriction a person that is 6 months out of surgery.

Our motivation and possibly some surgery swelling, which gives us restriction can be more powerful right after surgery. Mine was.

Commitment is great, but as we all know it can fade, just like many previous diets we have tried, where our committment is strong on Monday and fades by Friday.

I totally agree more restraint is needed to be successful with the band and the person that posted that had a pretty bad day, but it's hard to walk in another's shoes. You and I have not yet reached the six month mark, so I'll reserve judgement for now.

Good Luck with your journey and hope you beat that coffee monkey on your back. And if it's all "in our minds" why do we get bands?

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
