Looking for anyone out there who would like to talk about their hospital experience, with regard to their lap-band surgery. The date for my surgery is February 6th. I'll be admitted through Day Surgery, and--due to insurance requirements--will have to stay over-night. :D It's been almost thirty years since I've actually had an overnight stay in the hospital. It will be a "first" for me.

I had some trouble with bloat from the gas they use and was much more comfortable staying overnight and having someone look after me for 24 solid. I was also a little dehydrated from being on liquids only the week before, so the IV's helped a bunch. I am so glad I was required to spend the night. But that was my personal experience and you may have an easier or harder time than I did. Good luck and I wish you much success!

I was happy they made me stay.If i had gone home and felt anything weird i prbably would have freakedd out.It was not so bad.I actually stayed two nights. It is nice to have your own bed but staying with people who have been thru it and nurses who know what to do for you is the rright way to go

I'm a healthy person, just overweight, that being said I was very anxious to get home. They wanted to keep me longer, but I was saying what do you need me to do to get out of here. I became anxious after I was sure 1) I could keep liquids down and not get nauseated 2) I didn't have any problems peeing and 3) I could lap the building without assistance. I was out of surgery by 9 am and headed home at 11. Just the way I wanted!

I stayed one night. I am 5 days post op. I am glad that I did stay over night the staff was great and treated me like a queen.

I too have an issue with the gas but as each day passes it gets better. I am back to work today. Taking it easy. :D

I just had my surgery on 1/25. It was required that I stay overnight because I have sleep apnea. I really tried to fight that. I thought I would be more comfortable at home. To be honest, I am grateful that they made me stay. I had unanswered questions, gas that I wasn't expecting and the reassurance of someone taking my vitals and checking on me. I was out the following morning at 10:30 a.m., but still glad that I stayed. I was the "textbook" case according to my surgeon, I was up and walking the halls 2 hours post-op, the nurses were wonderful. I would recommend staying if your insurance pays for it. Karen

I went home the same day and I am so glad. I felt great after surgery and just wanted out of there. Once I was home I hit the couch, took pain meds and slept. I don't like having people wait on me. I like to do it all myself. I stayed at my mom's house and I was fine. You should do a lot of walking after surgery so getting up to get meds and something to drink kept me on my feet.

I came home the same day. Once I woke up I was fine. I went pee then they let me have my clothes and broth and Water and a popsicle. I drank a little broth a little water while they watched went pee (noone watched) got dressed and walked out of the hospital. I walked into walgreens with my friend to get my meds and we picked up juice and walked arround a little and she took me home. I took a nap and once I woke up my friend went home. I was fine. I watched tv and movies and did nothing the next day.

2 days after surgery I went out to the store to see people. I was a little closed up.

the 3rd day I took myself out to the movies for the day but that was all

it was a great little me time.

I had trouble keeping anything down so I didn't go home for 24 hours. My surgery didn't even start until 5:30 pm so I would have had to stay anyway. The room was spacious with a huge bathroom and a spectacular view of Mt. Hood. I was able to have IV anti nausea meds which helped a lot.

I stayed over night. I didn't feel very well after surgery and wish they had given me more pain meds (just so I could get some rest.) But I'm glad I stayed, my drive home was 3 1/2 hours so that wouldn't have been fun. Unfortunately my room was right by the helicopter pad and of course I heard it at about 3 a.m. Oh well all in all it wasn't too bad.

I wanted out of there :D

I didn't want to be woken up every hour for someone to check on me and do vitals. I didn't want to be forced do the breathing exercises and walk every hour - however my DH (take your pick on what the D stood for ) enforced all the rules on the 5 hour drive home.

Every stinkin hour he stopped at a gas station or a rest stop and drug my sleepin butt out of the car and made me walk!!!!

I just wanted pain meds and sleep!

I'm so glad I stayed overnight. The anti-nausea meds that were administered via the IV helped, tremendously. And, it was good to be in that reclining bed, rather than completely flat. Plus, I was able to move around as much as I wanted.

Hi:

I'm glad that I stayed overnight because I had big issues with nausea post op. I don't think I would have been able to walk to the bathroom the first 12 hours, so it's a good thing I was at the hospital and they brought one of those silly bathroom/toilet chairs over next to my bed. The slightest movement made me have dry heaves until I got off the morphine.

Best wishes for a quick recovery.

Sue

With my doctor if your BMI was below 40 you went to a surgery center and went home after surgery if all was okay. I am 55, diabetic, high blood pressure and I was scared. My blood sugar went up to 416 during surgery so they kept me a few hours longer than originally planned. I wanted to go home mostly because they would not leave me alone to rest. I still felt sleepy and drugged. I had to sit up and they were testing my blood sugar and giving me ice to crunch on. I kept asking to go home. They finally let me when my blood sugar came down and I slept the 25 minute drive home. The sleep was good. When I got home I hit the recliner as they said to sit up to release the gas better. I slept again very nicely sitting up and I never sleep in a recliner. I can't sleep in the car well either but because of the drugs still in my system I slept wonderful. So going home or staying at the hospital...... both are good.

I stayed 2 nights, 1 of which was in ICU (standard for my doctor). I'm glad I was there the first night... they really looked after me with the pain & nausea meds but I was so ready to go home by the next night. Hated the bed and didn't get a wink of sleep. Breathed a sigh of relief when I finally got to lay on my own bed. :tt1::biggrin2:

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
