Here Are The Requirements For Tricare

Recommended Posts

Guest usmcwifey

I have been fighting with my PCM now for almost two years with this. I am 5 foot 9 inches tall and currently weigh in at 261. I keep tearing my meniscus in my knee, and I have had numerous issues with my lower back, I am now starting to get hip pains. I gained about 80 pounds all of a sudden in the matter of 9 months. It started out slow, and then all of a sudden I was gaining sometimes 25 pounds a month. I was very active at the time it all started. My PCM thought that it may be due to my thyroid and has me on synthroid now, and my thyroid is still 4.90. I also have GERD, and my blood pressure has been high most everytime I have went into the clinic.

I need some pointers as to how to get this ball rolling? I have tried everything, I can barely walk at times since I gained all this weight, and I was walking 30 plus miles a week before, and gaining all this weight. My mom has had a gastic, my uncle, two of my aunts, and my grandma. They all have gained weight all of a sudden, and then it just progresses into lots of heath issues for them.

I would also like to look half way decent again, not that I am ugly, but, gaining weight has made my self confidence go down quite a bit. I also feel that it may be putting a strain on my marriage as well since I can't go out and be active like we once were hiking up mountains, walking, jogging, and the many other things we did together as a family.

Any pointers, thoughts, or ideas would be appreciated!

Thank you for your time,

Ang

Usmcwife...I was with Tricare, I was very young, had a BMI of 46 though, and had a few extra problems but I don't think i had the required three or whatever and I was approved in a week. They are funky people at tricare. However I did want to note that as a person who gained 90 lbs in 9 months due to bad habits and unfortunately due to a thyroid that was up to 22, I can say that a 4.9 is still too high. They change the range to .3-3.0 a few years ago but many doctors don't follow it. I hope your doctor keeps you on synthroid as it sounds like you have borderline hypothyroidism. (Not such an issue with weight loss, but it will help with cholesterol, moods, etc.)

Hi everyone I'm just starting this process and hopefully I can get some where with it! I'm going to the dr next week and I pray he will at least submit a referral to talk to a surgeon. I'm 5'5, 5'6 I weigh about 240 dpending on the time of day I have back problems and depression from it but I don't know about anything else. I've been over weight since I was like 5 years old and have never been able to get my weight down for very long. I have a terrible family history of Diabetes, Stroke, Heart Attacks, Congestive Heart Failure, sleep Apnea so I'm hoping maybe that will have some impact on there decision. I think my BMI is 38.7. Any advice or anyone have a similar situation??

Look at the dates on those posts. Some are a couple of years old. Tricare changed some of their requirements over the last few years. But I believe a referral is still required, since your PCM has to recommend you to see a WLS surgeon.

I also went to a weight loss seminar this Summer, but the surgeon told me I had to have a referral from my primary care doctor before Tricare Prime would authorize him. That referral was approved within a few days. I jumped through all the other hoops pretty quickly, and I'm having surgery in a few weeks.

If in doubt, call Tricare and ask them what they require. They'll tell you what your plan needs.

Thank you all so much for telling how you got the ball rolling so to speak. I live in ND, and after seeing a Halloween picture I've decided its time to get something done. I've always been heavy since my Jr year in high school. My moms whole side of the family is big. But after doing some research online, I've discovered im approximately 100 pounds over weight.

Im 5'7" weigh about 232. Before I had my daughter in Jan. 08 I weighed 185ish (I had been there for about 3 years). After having my daughter I weighed 260 in the hospital, then got down to 220. After speaking with my Dr about weight loss pills I was prescribed ephedrine for a 3 week period. (Now mind you, every time that I go up to base to see my PCM I have a new one, I have never had the same PCM for more than a 3 moth period) I had never felt better in my life, and I dropped down to 212. My daughter will be 3 in Jan, and I have not had any luck with getting rid of the weight. I have a problem with sleeping at night, and staying awake during the day. I am prescribed an anti depressant, an anti depressant/sleeping pill, and an anti anxiety pill. I am supposed to go to a chiropractor for back pain at least twice a week but since the all mighty tricare does not cover that, I cant afford to go when I need to. I have recently discovered (After starting a new job) that I have a significant knee pain that flairs up once in a while in one of my knees.

So my question to all of you is that with a BMI of 36, being 100 pounds over weight, having back pain, sleeping problems, and depression.. How well do you think this will all go for me? I have an appointment in a week to speak to the Dr about my "sleep" problems that I have been fighting with for 3 years now. But they dont know my real reason for going in there yet!

I attempted to speak to a Tricare rep to see if surgery requirements they tell us are any different than what's on the website. I don't know if I got a bad rep or what but she flat out told me she couldn't tell me anything because then "everyone would know what we were looking for". Um, yeah, hence my call. I can't fake my weight and comorbidities; what harm is it going to cause for you to let me know what you require so I don't waste yours and the medical director's time? *sigh* Sometimes I HATE working with Tricare; when they work they're wonderful but fighting with them about stuff is just tiresome. Luckily the office of the surgeon I would be seeing has been much more helpful with giving me info. Now if I could just get an appointment with my PCM...

I was able to see my PCM 2 weeks after making the appointment. She put in the referral for me to see the surgeon no problem. My seminar is on the 23rd. It is a requirement before I can schedule a consult with the surgeon. I will post in my blog how it goes from there. Im sooo excited!:blushing:

Tricare Standard does not require a referral (neither does Tricare Reserve Select); only Tricare Prime does.

@AvasMom: You are very fortunate. By the time my appointment with my PCM actually comes, I will literally have been waiting 2 MONTHS to see him, and this is my first appointment with him, period. We just moved to this base in August and I've been trying to get in since October. I hope to God he will give me a referral and I won't need to see him again for anything else WLS related, or at this rate I may never get it done.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
