How to handle eating out?

Recommended Posts

When no one around knows that you've had this surgery, how do you handle eating out or just eating around other people? I have a dinner to go to next week. I'll be one mo post-op, and two weeks pre first fill, so there aren't any major restrictions on what I can eat, just volume. I'm stressing about it though. I'm a clean your plate kinda girl ... I don't know what's on the menu yet, I'm hoping to find out in advance and do some planning. I can see this same situation coming up a lot though, and want to have some kind of idea as to how to handle it.

So what do you do? Make excuses for eating less than people think you should? Try to hide the food? Overeat and pay for it later?

If you are going to a chain, go online and find the menu...find something that is band friendly and stick with it...don't even open your menu (tell your friends you're going to have what you had the last time you were there because it was so FABULOUS)

Then...when you aren't able to eat much, just say it wasn't as good as the last time you were there.--or, you could always use the, I just ate a big lunch excuse!!!

As for other restaurants, you could probably do the same...just have them fax you their menu...

Good luck,

Rain

It's good to get a copy of the menu in advance. You could always ask for a lunch size portion, which is smaller, or eat the portion size out of the meal that makes you feel full, not "stuffed" and ask to take the rest home. Most meal portions these days are way beyond the normal serving sizes anyway. So, if your group does happen to ask why you didn't eat that much, you could even tell them that the meal was soooo good you wanted to save some to take home and have again.

I think others can be more critical and notice your eating habits more so when they know you've had the surgery. I have a group of friends at work that know I have the lap-band and are almost like the food police at times, yet others could really care less and not even pay attention to whats on my plate or whats left on it. Don't stress too much over it. You'll be fine.:)

It's never an option to overeat and "pay for it later" unless a stretched pouch, impacted stoma, prolonged blockage, etc. are acceptable consequences to you.

Tell people you're eating less in effort to lose weight.

Tell people you're still full from a big breakfast/lunch/whatever.

Order the Soup and say that it sounds really good.

etc.

BTW, "paying for it later" might involve a later, but will almost guaranteeably involve a right now. And if you're concerned that trying to hide your band when you order, wait until you're trying to hide your banding while you're stuck or if you've overeaten.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it that much. Unless you've told everyone about the surgery, most people probably wont notice, and if they do, you can just say things like "had a big lunch" "just wasn't that hungry" "watchin' the waistband" etc, etc.

most people aren't going to notice how much you did or didn't eat. The more you talk, the less you eat. Its rude to ask someone why they're not stuffing themselves :girl_hug: I would just say that you weren't very hungry and you were enjoying the conversation so much that your food got cold - you'd rather take it home and savor it warm :)

i agree just look at the menus and there is some thing on there that should be light enough for you to eat. ask about thier Soups. i know i went to chilis and i had a cup of chicken tortilla Soup i couldnt even eat the whole cup.lol or on days like that order a chicken breast with a side of steamed veggies and eat what you can and take the rest home. i always plan my daily meals if i go out cause i watch to not go over 900-1000 calories a day. and i try not to go over 30 g a fat a day. plus you can always look on line at menus like mentioned above. im sure some of the stuff you find on those menus the restaurant your goin to might have something similar to that on there.

I eat out a lot and I have been shocked at how little people notice how much you eat. I just eat tiny bites but push my food around in my plate. Every once in while someone comments that I barely ate anything - then I say something like 'had a big breakfast' or that I am not feeling that great. The only thing I have had trouble with is eating to fast when I am out with fast eaters. I am talking or something and dont pay attention - that has a bad result!

I typically order Soup, and have discovered some really fabulous Soups out there!! If they have grilled chicken with grilled or steamed veggies that is a great option too! You can eat the veggies and some of the chicken and take the rest home. I ALWAYS hvae left overs now.

When my DH and I eat out we split a meal and split a dessert. It works out very well for us.

We've all been so busy for so many years stuffing our chubby little faces and licking our 7-course meal plate clean, we never raised our heads out of the potato salad bowl long enough to see that it is totally NORMAL not to finish all the food on your plate!!!!!! (Zounds...real people do it every day!) You can do one of two things....order a real meal and eat the "good stuff" (let things like the salad slide if it comes with the meal. If salad comes with the meal ask to have it broiught WITH the meal. Otherwise you are going to be tempted to take 4-5 bites of salad and you won't be able to eat a THING by the time the meal arrives.... Unless you want to eat just a salad then order just that. This also gives a lot more stuff surrounding you that you can "play" with.) and do a lot of pushing your food around on the plate, taking multitudes of tiny tiny bites...then ask for a doggie bag, or you can order from the appetizer section, which is what I generally do. What you get is smaller portion than a whole meal and totally filling and you can get some yummy stuff. Just remember to tell the server that you want your appetizer brought with the regular meals at the table...not beforehand. Remember....there are no bad foods....just bad portions.

And talking about splitting dishes....there are a LOT of people who don't eat a lot and would LOVE to split a meal with you. You can maneuver that based on the company you are with. Another great restaurant meal is a totally loaded baked potato (period). It is wonderful and will fill you to the brim. You feel like you are really doing something scandalous....but a loaded baked potato by itself without anything else isn't but around 300 or so calories. Just because you are at a restaurant you don't have to feel the need to put on a "show of eating" for others. Get what you want and take home what''s left or get something small. One thing I have found since being banded....I'm one helluva cheap date at a restaurant!!! ;)

"do a lot of pushing your food around on the plate, taking multitudes of tiny tiny bites...then ask for a doggie bag, "

I totally do this. Drives my friends nuts. They just aren't used to me NOT licking the plate clean! Haha. They are learning to deal with it, and now start taking bets on how many bites I'll take before I shove my plate away!

Dude, I went out with my friend over the weekend to a steakhouse and that's what I ordered, the loaded baked potato. She had ribs, baked macaroni and cheese, steak fries, not to mention the salad beforehand. After eating my potato, I was so stuffed. It's not only totally yummy and feels like you're cheating, but it's also filling and like you said, not too bad. :welldoneclap:

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
