Very low iron

I had my bypass over 5 years ago and just now my iron levels have plummeted, along with every other iron related test. I see my surgeon office for my yearly check this week. I am worried because I have had to pay for 2 endoscopies last year which found an ulcer and an errant staple which they say caused the ulcer. My iron serum is at 16mcg when it should be 50 at the low end. Anyone else have very low iron and is the fix just an iron supplement?

Did the dr put you on Prilosec or something like that for the ulcers? My daughter (who also had a bypass) was taking too much naproxen because her sciatica was flared up. She ended up with an ulcer. Her hemoglobin got down to 2.4 - she should have died! But she spent 3 days in ICU & got 6 units of blood. She was told to take Prilosec to heal the ulcer. I thank God every day that she somehow made it through! Dr told her he has never seen a hemoglobin that low! It’s crazy that she was walking around like that!

Take care of yourself!

They did put me on 3 medications for the ulcer, but after the 2nd scope they said I could stop. I have osteoporosis so I can't take ppi's for too long. Glad she is doing better

i have low iron. about to start a round of infusions because my body cannot absorb the iron tablets.

Did a Dr tell you to get an infusion? Asking because I am always borderline anemic & take iron but the Dr has never recommended that for me. My ferritin count is always low even before the bypass.

I did 1 year later in 2024, my hemoglobin went down to 7, and ferritin to 5. I had to get an iron infusion on top of the iron supplements. To be fair though, I was slightly anemic pre-op, and I had an infusion in 2020, though my iron wasn't as bad as what happened in 2024. I'm holding steady now and still on supplements.
