Prepping for February 14th (Surgery Day)

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, hope everyone is having a good weekend so far. I am on day 2 of my pre surgery diet, and I'll be going under the knife next month on the 14th. I have my Walmart cart locked and loaded, have supplements on the way plus little 2 oz and 4 oz plastic cups to measure out my portions. I know besides following the diet and trying my best to prepare, should be making things easier. And it is taking the stress of the details away. I feel like there's nothing that's ultimately prepare me for waking up without a part of me. I know it's still gonna be there, but altered and my biggest fear is I'm going through all of this for nothing. Like I'm gonna fail in the long run (probably because I have had so much success only to lose it all in the past) But I owe myself the chance to be successful for the long haul, and so I am going to power through.

Aside from proportioned containers and the supplements, is there anything you guys might be able to recommend to make things smoother? I have a nice variety of Protein Shakes, chicken broth, orange Jello, oikos triple 0 and cottage cheese, and 0 sugar Gatorade. Any advise, recommendations or general encouragement is for sure appreciated ❤️

TLDR: 1.sugar-free pudding with sugar-free Cool Whip, 2. Mio, and 3. plastic portion cups.
There are two food/drink favorites of mine, looking back to my first 3 months of post-op. First is Jello sugar-free instant pudding. The box says "makes four 1/2cup servings," but I make five. I top it with a tbsp of sugar-free Cool Whip, and I had one at the end of every day. A real treat. And, you'll be able to eat pudding very soon. Second: in a 32-oz water bottle, put in about a cup of Water and squirt in some Mio Water Enhancer. My fave is the fruit punch flavor. You'll have to experiment with how much to put in. Too little and there's not enough flavor; too much and it's too sweet and heavy. After squirting in the Mio, I add my daily scoop of Miralax (has absolutely no taste or texture). I needed it-- you may not need any laxative at all. Stir well. Then fill up the bottle with more water. Sip throughout the next few hours. It's a great way to get your minimum 64 ozs of water. One more tip is to order a sleeve of 5-oz condiment cups (Amazon calls them "plastic portion cups") with snap-on lids. The kind you find in restaurants for putting Salad Dressing or salsa into. Restaurant ones are only about 1-ounce size, which is too small for our use. The 5-oz is what you need. I use them every day for portioning out so many things. I bought 100, but I keep washing them out after each use, so 100 looks like a lifetime supply for me. Wishing you the very best!!

I actually would recommend not buying too much of any one thing. A lot of us experienced changes to our tastes such that things we enjoyed pre-surgery became things we couldn't stand afterward.

Just for clarity, part of your stomach is actually removed from your body when you undergo gastric sleeve surgery.

I know that it 2/3rds of my stomach is coming out. But thank you for your input.

girrrrlllllllllllllll I had the same fear!! Like you said you owe it to yourself to be healthy, and shoot nothing else worked why not try this! Those were my thoughts. My initial goal was to be 200lbs and then it kept going down and I am stopping around 165-170, Once you are able to see the results, the new clothes, being more active, feeling good about yourself you realize that all this hard work was NOT for nothing.

For reference I have lost 130ish lbs in a year! Its super duper doable!! Ask anything in this forum everyone is super willing to help and give you what worked for them.

. You are going to kick ass and take names!!!

You got this! For me, sugar free popsicles were my best friend. You may have effects to either hot liquids or cold liquids, for me I could not tolerate hot too much but cold liquids were soothing. Therefore sugar free popsicles help to this day with both soothing and are perfect when I'm craving something sweet. I never experienced dumping syndrome, but something to keep in mind in case that affects you post surgery.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
