Soft food/Puree Out of Town

Recommended Posts

I will be out of town tomorrow at a conference for a few days. When I applied for the conference I put vegan as my food preference. I am concerned I am going to get a lot of non cooked vegetables. I am really worried about food.

I am in the soft food/puree stage. Yesterday we bought some food I thought I could bring with me. Smash it up and eat it. I tried some last night. I don't think I am ready for it. Yesterday was my first time eating at a restaraunt also, I did ok, I had Miso Soup and oysters. I unbreaded the oysters, smashed them and I was ok. But the fish bites I bought, I tried last night. No... They were a no.

Ideas on food I can bring with me, I leave tomorrow. I am bringing pre made shakes.

Any cream of ??? Soup, any soufflé, scrambled eggs, pate, bolognaise sauce. chilli without rice, any mince meat curry. Greek yogurt, milk and soft cheese are good back ups, Also any instant porridge pot or any milk based Cereal.

Sorry I am struggling to remember what I ate at this stage, I hope other people help you too

Worst case, fall back to broths- they have Swanson’s sipping broths, or even carry with you Soups. At restaurants, go with soups, or refried Beans with melted cheese or maybe mashed potato? I’m still in puréed foods and i have sugar free Jello and sugar free pudding cups too, maybe apple sauce cups. I also found these tuna packs (Starkist tuna in olive oil) or soft salmon pouches that im trying as i move into soft foods. Good luck!

Have you tried those different flavor tuna pouches? I get them at almost any grocery store. I like the lemon pepper the most, probably.

I have not tried the pouches, but I have tried the little cups of them. I only had one. I will look into it. Thank you both. That is a great suggestion.

I am really trying to reach my Protein intake daily.

I have half of my Protein Shake gone and I started on it at 8am, its almost noon.

I am going to try to eat a soft boiled egg today. I have not ate eggs in over 3 years. I get a little anxious eating foods I haven't ate in a long time. I don't want to upset my stomach. I need to hit my Protein intake. Even though they are not exceptionally high in protein I am going to try. I doubt I will eat animal products in a few months but right now I think I am to lazy to get nutrition other ways.

I see you are in WA, who did your surgery? I'm with Multicare Tacoma, surgery in 3 days.

At barely two weeks out I’d try to stick more to Soups, scrambled eggs, & other more puréed foods that more easily slide down & require little chewing. Look at soft & very tender slow cooked meats. You could mash up mince, sausages (or vegan alternatives), the fillings of steamed wontons or gyoza & be okay. Add any sauces or gravies available yo keep them more moist. Try a soft flaked white fish that has been poached or steamed. I’d avoid anything breaded or fried as the meat will likely be more dry. Go slowly & if in doubt don’t.

Remember the staged return to eating diet is to protect your healing tummy & not strain all those sutures & staples holding it together with food that is too coarse, dry, dense or difficult to digest.

Pack some shakes & pre prepared soups, grab some yoghurts from a local store, etc. as a back up. Nothing stopping you speaking with the caters at the conference to explain your situation. You don’t have to tell them you had bariatric surgery you can just say an abdominal surgery that requires a more restricted diet as you’re still healing.

Thank you SO much I appreciate all your replies.

every-time I have eggs i get sick.

I bought Soups, broth, muscle milk, tuna, just in case there's nothing there for me.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
