1 week in the Caribbean...

Recommended Posts

So i just got back from a trip to Puerto Rico (work trip) and man that place is not for people who had weight loss surgery. 1st there is no sugar free anything. especially drinks. No sugar free gatorade, Powerade ect... Nothing low carb. bread is a huge huge part of everything. I even went to a Walmart and nothing. just some Protein Bars and such. Only Protein Shakes i could find were just regular ensure and some other strange brand i have not seen. Best part was i finally fit in a coach seat without issue. before i would spill over to the next seat or be so tight it would be so uncomfortable. Now i fit perfect with plenty of room to spare. Got to say i am happy to be back.

It can certainly be challenging to maintain a low-carb or sugar-free diet while traveling, especially in places where those options may not be widely available. However, it's not impossible to make healthy choices while on the road.

One strategy that can be helpful is to plan ahead and research the area you'll be visiting to identify any grocery stores or markets that may have healthier options. You can also bring your own Snacks and meals with you, such as Protein Bars, nuts, and low-carb Meal Replacements.

Another strategy is to focus on ordering high-protein, low-carb options when dining out. For example, a grilled chicken breast with a side of vegetables, or a salad with Protein like grilled fish or chicken.

It's also important to remember that weight loss is a journey, and it's important to be kind to yourself. You can always get back on track once you're back home.

It's good to hear that you were able to fit comfortably in the coach seat, which is a great reminder of the benefits of your weight loss journey.

Ahh my family is planning a trip to a Latin American country & I'm worried about those exact same things! I assume I'll have to take half of my Protein snack stock & live off of pre-cooked frozen chicken breast from the grocery store. I'd have to stick to the basics.

I'm happy to hear you fit in the seat better! That has to be an amazing feeling

You’re absolutely right, especially when it comes to traditional foods. It’s like that in a lot of the places in the Caribbean TBH. It was substantially easier to go sugar free in Europe.

When I was in Puerto Rico, I resigned myself to exclusively drink Water when out and eat whole Protein (no substitutes) and vegetables/legumes.

I live in PR and I’m getting my surgery next week. Where did you stay??? Cause I’ve found everything I need and more. Yes culturally we do use rice and bread a lot but there is plenty of options.
If somebody is coming over just ask, we can point you where to find everything, defined in a touristy are it will be more difficult.

I am from Puerto Rico. I grew up in Coamo but most recently i was in Vega Baja. I went to the Walmart in Bayamon as well as a few supermarkets like Econo and some other one i forget what its called. I really didnt find much options, Plus everything is so expensive Thats one thing i dont remember about living there lol. and since when the heck did they start charging for plastic bags lol When the cashier asked if i wanted a bag and charged me 15 cents i was like WTF haha

      tl:dr at bottom,
I could use some advice. I went to see my dietician today (not a bariatric surgery dietician, I can explain why I am seeing her if you want to know). She knows I am going to have weight loss surgery as long as I hit the goal weight my insurance told me I need to be at. I have to be at the goal weight by June 24, 2023, in order for my insurance to pay for my surgery.
I had a weigh in the doctor's office a couple of days ago and weighed 301, my scale at home said 302. However, on the same day, the scale at a friend's house said 313.
I knew I had this Dietician appointment two days later and I knew she would weigh me. I continued to weigh myself at home (after getting new batteries) and I was at 302 then 299 and today at home I weighed 303, right before my appointment, when I got to her office I was weighed and it said 313.
I am concerned about what to believe since the doctor's office and my scale show similar numbers. I also bought a new scale today and it said 313.
The Dietician told me I needed to eat more protein, which honestly I struggle with. she said I needed 150 grams!!  I said are you kidding? that seems like a lot.  She used my weight to come up with this number.
Should I really be trying to eat enough protein for a 300-lb person or should I be eating protein for a goal-weight person (mine is 170)?
also, my clothing is loose like I lost the 20 lbs mine and the doctor's scale shows, and not 10 lbs like everyone else's scale shows. Also, I have always naturally been more muscular even when I was 120 lbs and did not eat any protein aside from what is in plants.
tl:dr- should I be eating enough protein to support a 300lb person or should I be eating protein for a "normal" sized person? AND should I trust the Doctors scale more so than the Dietician's scale?
