How long before the GAS Stops post-op?

Recommended Posts

HI Everyone,

I was banded 12/13/07 and was wondering how many days before the gas stops? I find it strange that I have not expelled all of the surgery air by now. Is the post op liquid shakes causing this condition now??

Can all of you who have gone through this reply & let me know how long did it take before you stopped getting shoulder pain & passing gas after surgery?

Thanks in advance!

Gas with the left shoulder and neck pain was about 2.5 weeks. Gas itself (burping and farting) about 30 days.

Have you tried using a heating pad or rubbing the spots where you feel the gas building up? That and walking around seem to be helping the most for me. I'm not really tooting it up over here like a herd of elephants, but I do feel the gas moving around a lot more.

I did not have a lot of pain from gas, but I definitely had the gas. My abdomen was very distended and I have new stretch marks from it. Either they are new or I can see the ones from when I was pregnant more since my belly is stretched. I'm 3 weeks out and still have a distended abdomen (mostly upper area), and even though I have lost weight, I cannot fit into jeans that I wore before surgery because the waist is way too tight. I do occasionally burp more than I previously did (never really burped before), and passing gas is about the same (normal).

I do hope that this distention goes away soon.

I have the belly distention too. I'm less than a week out, but it is really uncomfortable. Makes me feel so fat, despite the 10 pounds I've lost since I started the liquid diet pre-op. I also have a weird burping issues. I feel like I need to burp, but nothing comes out. Has nothing to do with eating either, it can happen first thing in the morning. Very odd.

HI,

Yes, I walk, use a heating pad & rub shoulder... I do see some improvement (slight) every day...but seriously wonder if I will stop having this type of gas forever.

I am still on liquids until tomorrow (progress to mushys then). I do know the powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury Protein shakes had tons of air in them... When you make a shake with 8 oz of milk & 1 scoop of Protein how does it become 12-14oz after blending??? Hmmm?? I think maybe the difference in volume comes from AIR during blending??

I switched to high protein slimfast shakes (already made in the can) & added a Liquid Protein supplement from GNC. This hasn't cut the gas like I thought it would..

Does anyone know if having a hernia repaired at the same time would cause more? Would that change the pressure in my abdomen since that tear is patched?? I am reaching I know, but really want to know that I will not be passing this much gas for the rest of my life everyday! Oh, I am also ruling out lactose intolerance since I was a HUGE dairy eater pre band and never had problems....

Go to the drugstore and buy yourself a couple of boxes of gas-x strips.

They are not chalky and work like a charm.

I like the cinnamon. Mint just reminds me of milk of magnesia my mom shoveled down me as a kid.

The gas will go away soon.

Good luck!

I have the Gas X strips and have been using them a lot, since the day after surgery. This isn't gas in my GI, it is the air in my body from the surgery ( I think). I thought maybe the Gas X strips would help the burping, they might be, but I'm still surprised at that burp feeling.

The best drinks I've found are the EAS Protein drinks. 17g of Protein and they taste really good, they are super thin, not thick and goopy.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
