So popcorn is NOT my friend....

Recommended Posts

I'm almost 7 1/2 months post op, and I thought "Oh! Let me see how I do with some plain popcorn. It's ok to have that on my diet" so I got 1 cup (used a measuring cup) of popcorn and sat with the hubby to watch a movie (this was last night). I ate it slowly, 1 piece at a time. Waited until it was a designated snack time. And by the time I was done with it, my stomach HATED me. Omg.... I was so nauseous and ended up with diarrhea and had stomach pain. Today I'm still not feeling great so I've been taking it easy with what I eat and drink. It's trial and error to see what I can eat now and what I can't. And popcorn is definitely on the "can't" list.

Edited to add: Bacon still tastes gross, pickles are still gross, sweets still hold no appeal for me at all, still can't tolerate carbonation well so no soda at all, can finally tolerate a small amount of Himalayan salt (and I do mean a SMALL amount), still don't like pork chops anymore, etc... All these things I loved pre surgery, and now...nope. Not gonna happen. I either don't like it, don't want it, or can't tolerate it. I thought it would have worn off by now, but so far it's still going strong. I do miss popcorn, tho :(

It is absolutely so weird how much interpersonal variation we experience on this journey. I can manage popcorn in any quantity but I can't process one small piece of (cooked) carrot - that's my nemesis, LOL. And stuff that we absolutely cannot process one month becomes do-able the next. All part of listening to our newly fashioned stomach and body.

Thanks for sharing - I do love reading your posts and keeping up with your progress - you're doing amazingly. 😍

Wow really?! Thats good to know bc that's one of the foods I've been so excited to have again! My program says to avoid popcorn for the first 3 months bc our stomachs might disagree with them now I worry I won't be able to handle it either! I will try it next month 🤞🏻

In terms of food changes, I find I crave cheese less & I like salads & veggies more. Probably the most ideal taste change I could experience lol

popcorn is a slider food. It’s easy to eat so you end up eating way more than you can actually manage hence the feeling awful after.

Carrot was the first food I threw up, @Spinoza. Ate it one day & it was fine. The next day up it came. A few days later & ever since no problem.

Our tummy’s have so many quirky idiosyncrasies that sometimes you can’t predict how it will react. Even three & a half years later I learn things about my tummy & digestive system.

OH NO! I love popcorn, it is a slider food but I still eat it regularly without issues. I count the calories, make sure it fits into my daily goals as a snack and roll with it.

I guess we live and learn but I hope you feel better soon.

So far nothing disagrees with me. Which, I am grateful for but yet disappointed. haha

I have always been a salty person (before WLS) now after WLS I crave sweet things. It is weird, I have never been a sweet person. I manage it and it doesn't control me but still weird how things change.

I can eat popcorn. I have to watch it, though, because it's easy to scarf away A LOT of it (it's mostly air so it shrinks down to nothing in your stomach). I rarely indulge because of that, because I often end up eating a lot more of it than I intended to.

Yea, I can eat a ton if I let myself, those slider foods never fill you up. haha

I buy the small 100 calorie bags, or measure out a serving so I don't go over board.

I was missing popcorn so bad, my doctor said I could never have it again... Then I found out other people were allowed. So I tried it. I felt fine, but my favorite snack ever is now not that appealing to me.

I can eat popcorn and I still like it. The trouble is having too much, so I measure out a cup and don't allow myself to have more.

What I can't eat still are a lot of dairy products. I can eat a slice or two of yellow cheese, but greek yogurt and fresh mozzarella upset my stomach. Also, I can't really eat bread or Pasta, which is OK, since I was on low carb for a long time and haven't really had them for years. Even the Protein bread, which I ate while on low card, doesn't agree with me all that well and I can have less than one slice.

me and popcorn are BFFs.

i have been known to eat an entire bag of microwave popcorn over a couple hours.

many times.

i had it for the first time after around 7-8 months post op (in maintenance) and had no issues with it.

i don't think i had any issues with any food really, just the amounts of it. i mean i could/can have sugar, just not alot.

though i do notice that i became MORE lactose intolerant after surgery. but again, i can still have dairy, just need to reduce the amounts (or remember to take my lactose pill...which i almost always forget for some reason 🤷🏻‍♀️)

its all trial and error, and its very individual.

p.s. im 4+ years out

Now I want to try popcorn lol. I haven't had it for almost 2 years . I went on a huge popcorn kick and still have quite a bit. I don't believe I'll have a problem. I haven't ran into any problems concerning food (fortunately or unfortunately depending on how one sees it).

I like popcorn because the serving size seems enormous and it takes me forever to eat it because I eat it one piece at a time.

Raw apples seem to be my kryptonite; every time I eat one I end up feeling crappy afterward, even a little tiny piece in a salad.

Oh yeah, apples definitely are not my friend, either.

Aw I feel for you. One of my favorite Snacks is a small green apple [emoji520], sometimes dipped in PB2. Maybe later on, you will be able to tolerate it.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
