3rd day post op/first day home:: Gas Pains

Gas pains are unreal. I’m taking gasex as prescribed how long will these last? Every hiccup and burp is excurciating

Mine was pretty much ok after about 4/5 days. I was told gasEX won't help. I was told this by my team and the nurses in the hospital.

Gasex is for gas trapped in your bowels, gas from surgery is trapped in your body cavity (usually the chest)

My gas pain was horrid the first 2 days I couldn't even deal with it. I asked for pain meds just so they would knock me out and I wouldn't have to deal with it. lol (PS: I was given a double dose of gas because my surgery was 3 in 1 and took way longer than the average bypass)

The gas pains have been the worst part of this for me. The gas is finally subsiding for the most part. I still get some pains in left shoulder area which i was told is a common area for the gas to settle, however the pain is less intense and is coming in longer intervals and lasting less time. Thank God! I am one week and one day post op. I was told not to take anything for it though and to walk it off, which does help.

Had surgery Monday and feel the same. When I burp, fart, cough, move it all hurts.

Oh it'll all be gone in a few days! & don't worry, the discomfort will diminish every day. It'll be gone before you know it

Yep, the gas is in your abdominal cavity not your digestive system & the pain occurs as it rises & gets trapped under your lungs. It escapes by attaching itself to Water molecules in your lungs & you breathe it out. Best things to help are walking (gentle but regular walks around your house, garden or down the street as you’re able), marching on the spot, rising your arms up & down, slow deep breathing & heat packs. The activity helps move the gas up & breathing more deeply or heavily helps it escape.

It can take some a week for theirs to fully dissipate.

I'm 3 days post bypass (12/8), the night of and day after were awful with the gas pain, kept me from sleeping so I did alot of laps around the nurses station. Today the pain is almost gone. Hang in there, it does go away.
